Nature, outdoor activities and winter sports come together in Štrbské Pleso. The mountain lake, various educational and fitness trails, and facilities for skiing and cross-country skiing give you specific points to consider when choosing your destination. Rail connections and the seasonal conditions for individual activities may also play a role in your planning.

Discover the Mountain Lake and the Tatras

Štrbské Pleso is part of Tatra National Park (TANAP), Slovakia’s oldest national park. The lake of the same name is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak part of the High Tatras. The lake and the mountain landscape are therefore central to understanding the character of the place.

The Štrbské Pleso educational trail introduces visitors to a range of local topics. Forty stylish wooden information boards cover the area’s history, flora and fauna, notable people who worked here, sporting activities and spa history. The boards are in Slovak and English. The trail is accessible and open year-round.

Educational Trails with Different Focuses

Another educational trail leads from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso and back. Its 14 stops provide information about local plant and animal species, as well as the formation and geology of the Tatras. The route starts in Štrbské Pleso and remains open in winter. When there is snow, hikers are redirected onto a winter route; check seasonal trail conditions before setting out.

The fitness and oxygen trail around Štrbské pleso is different: it is 2.2 kilometres long and has six stops. The two trails therefore have different focuses—one offers exercise along a route with stops, while the other provides information about nature and geology on the way to Popradské pleso. The stated lengths and number of stops help you compare them without specifying a walking time.

Local History and Sport

Jazierka lásky were originally known as Štrbské rybníky, or Štrbské fishponds. Jozef Szentiványi used them to raise trout. Their former name and use give the site its own historical dimension alongside the topics covered by the educational trail.

The Skokanské mostíky ski jumps are also linked to sporting history: they took their current form during preparations for the 1970 World Ski Championships. Together with the information about sporting activities on the educational trail, they offer a glimpse of two different aspects of local sports history.

Compare Winter Activities

The Štrbské Pleso ski area offers nine kilometres of easy, gentle runs as well as intermediate slopes. The piste layout may change. For cross-country skiing, there are eight trails ranging from 1.4 to 5 kilometres in length; their routes and grooming may also vary seasonally. These details make it easy to distinguish between the two options: downhill runs and slopes on the one hand, and cross-country trails of varying lengths on the other.

The cross-country skiing area also has a visitor tent, a buffet, a ski school, ski servicing and ski rental. The availability of these facilities may vary by season. Another winter activity is a 100-metre-long snow tubing run, which may also not always be available. A ski touring route starts at the bottom station of the chairlift to Solisko and follows yellow markings to the foot of the Skok waterfall. Winter access depends on snow conditions, safety regulations and conditions in the mountains.

Getting There by Train or Car

The Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad Tatry, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso. Another rail connection is the cog railway from Tatranská Štrba to Štrbské Pleso, which has been in operation since 1896. Timetables vary by season. Check the latest times before travelling so you can plan your arrival accordingly.

Štrbské Pleso can be reached by car via a nearby exit from the D1 motorway. For your specific journey, it is worth taking traffic conditions into account. This lets you compare rail connections with driving when planning your trip, without assuming a particular journey time for either option.
