Vyšný Klátov lies at the transition between the northwestern part of the Košická kotlina basin and the Slovenské rudohorie mountains. The village is in the Volovské vrchy range, which is part of the Slovenské rudohorie, and in the headwaters of the Myslavský potok stream. For trip planning, hiking destinations and local culture sit side by side: trails, the astronomy educational trail, the church, and local history each offer a different focus.

Landscape and high points

The cadastral area of Vyšný Klátov includes part of the Volovské vrchy Special Protection Area. At 947 metres, Predné Holisko is the highest peak within this cadastral area. This gives you two ways to get a sense of the landscape: its protected area and a specifically named high point.

Hiking and cycling routes

Two marked hiking routes start in Vyšný Klátov and lead to different destinations. The blue-marked hiking route leads to the nearby Jahodná sports and recreation centre. The yellow-marked route leads to the Lajoška mountain hut and onward to Železný vrch, at an elevation of 817.5 metres. Lajoška is in the vicinity of Vyšný Klátov, at an elevation of 908 metres below the summit of Predná Holica. A blue-marked cycling route also runs through the village. Since blue is used for both a hiking route and the cycling route, distinguishing them by activity is useful for planning. Markings and trail conditions may change; check the current situation before setting out.

Klátovské meteority educational trail

The Klátovské meteority educational trail starts in Vyšný Klátov and focuses on astronomy. It is connected with the meteorite fall on 28 February 2010 in the municipality’s territory. This self-guided, linear hiking trail can be walked in either direction and is intended for all seasons. It is 2.2 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 60 metres—two specific figures to help plan the route. There are four information boards in the village; individual boards may be relocated. As maintenance and access may also change, check the current situation before setting out.

Church, museum, and local history

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1869 on the site of an older church; the tower of the earlier church building was incorporated into the new one. The church has historicist Art Nouveau altars dating from the first half of the 20th century. The term “historicist” refers to a revival of earlier styles and adds another design element to the Art Nouveau reference.

The Folk Culture Minimuseum was established in 2001 in a former village forge. Its collection includes historic furniture, household and agricultural items, homemade folk costumes, and embroidery. If you plan a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance, as they may change.

Another historical chapter spans 1317 to 1773: during this period, Vyšný Klátov was a German colony. This was associated with the exploration of mineral resources, as well as the mining and processing of iron ore. This history differs in both period and subject from the church’s construction history and the items in the minimuseum’s collection.
