Krokava: Nature at Tŕstie and Village History
Accommodation in Krokava
Krokava lies on the southern slope of Tŕstie in the eastern Slovak Ore Mountains. Its cadastral area ranges from 750 to 1,121 metres above sea level; this elevation range refers to the entire area, not to a single point in the village. To get your bearings, both its location on Tŕstie and its wide range of elevations help shape the picture of the destination. Nature, routes and evidence of local folk culture offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Krokava, these themes can help you match the character of the place with your travel interests.
Landscape and the Tŕstie Nature Reserve
The Tŕstie Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Tisovec, Rimavská Píla and Krokava. It has been protected since 1980 and covers 28.71 hectares. The protected area includes rare, biologically diverse marsh and peat habitats, including habitats with the rare round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). The reserve thus connects Krokava with a natural area that also extends across the cadastral areas of Tisovec and Rimavská Píla.
The area around Krokava is largely deforested. Where forests predominate, they are mainly beech forests. Together with the elevation, this gives you several landscape features to keep in mind during your stay: the southern slope of Tŕstie, the marsh and peat habitats of the protected area, and the beech forests in the wooded parts. These themes describe different aspects of the area rather than reducing it to a single type of landscape.
The Tŕstie Nature Trail and Routes
The Tŕstie nature trail from Tisovec is six kilometres long and has five information panels about the Tŕstie massif and its natural wealth. Part of the trail passes through the nature reserve. There is also a monument to botanist Václav Vraný along the route. The trail offers distant views of the Low and High Tatras and Muránska planina. It is intended for pedestrians only. The trail’s length, panels and named landscape features give you several specific points to consider when planning a hike.
The Cesta Márie Széchy offers a different route perspective. It runs along the ridge of Tŕstie between Fiľakovo Castle and Muráň Castle. For the nature trail, the focus is on a specific length, information panels and a monument; for the Cesta, it is the ridge route and the two castles at either end. The routes therefore differ in their stated points of reference and themes.
Cycling and Winter Activities
The Krokava cycling route is graded as moderately difficult and climbs through Krokava to the ski lift at the end of the village. From the top of the ski lift, there is a view of the municipality of Sirk and Mount Železník. A ski area is also located in the cadastral area of Krokava. When planning your trip, you can consider the cycling and winter activities separately, without conflating the cycling route’s difficulty rating with a statement about the ski area’s operation.
Houses and Architectural Heritage in Krokava
The houses also offer a glimpse of the village. The picturesque cottages give visitors a sense of local folk culture, while some centuries-old houses offer insights into Krokava’s history. The bell tower has a distinctive architectural feature: its ground floor is built of masonry, while the upper floor is clad in wood. This architectural style adds a local cultural perspective to the nature and route themes. Both the landscape around Tŕstie and the houses and bell tower may therefore play a part in choosing your destination.
