Dulovo: Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Dulovo
Dulovo combines a location in the Rimavská kotlina basin with a local history dating back to the early 15th century. Its landscape, historical names, and religious architectural history offer various points of reference for planning a trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Dulovo, these local themes can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.
Landscape along the Blh
Dulovo lies in the Rimavská kotlina basin, on the right-hand floodplain and lowest terrace of the Blh. The area is predominantly flat to hilly and has pronounced terraces. Dulovo’s specific location along the Blh and the area’s relief describe different aspects: the former locates Dulovo, while the latter describes the broader shape of the terrain. Remnants of oak-hornbeam forests remain in the western part of the area. These forest remnants are located in the west, while the terraces describe the terrain of the area.
Local history and names
Dulovo was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. Historical forms of its name include Dwihaza (1455), Dulovec (1920), and Dulovo from 1927 onward; Dulháza is the Hungarian name for the village. The sequence of names can thus be placed in chronological order: Dwihaza dates to the 15th century, while Dulovec and Dulovo, used from 1927, date to the 20th century.
Settlement was not continuous: Dulovo was uninhabited in the 16th and 17th centuries and was resettled at the beginning of the 18th century. Its founding, lengthy interruption, and resettlement thus represent three distinct phases.
Agriculture and historic buildings
Historically, fruit trees, cabbage, other vegetables, and hemp were grown in Dulovo. Later, the village became known for tobacco cultivation. Pastures were used by residents to graze their livestock. Crop growing and livestock farming can thus be understood as distinct forms of historical land use, with tobacco cultivation emerging later.
In the 19th century, MP Abrahám Farkas and his son Mikuláš Farkas built a manor house in Dulovo. There was a mill in Dulovo by the Blh stream. A two-stone mill on the Balog River is recorded for Dúlháza.
The bell tower of Dúlháza
The bell tower of Dúlháza (Dulovo) is a small religious monument. The inscription “ANNO D. 1740/FERENC VRAIN. V. /DULHÁZI REMEK” appears on the tower. A worn Latin inscription bearing the year 1809 can also be read there. The inventory updated in 2018 notes that repairs are needed. The dates 1740 and 1809 provide a chronological context for the inscriptions; the Latin inscription from 1809 is specifically described as worn.
