Ozdín: Nature, Castle and Village Traditions
Accommodation in Ozdín
Ozdín combines natural attractions with architectural history and local customs. The hiking trail to Vrch Hrad and access to the castle offer specific destinations for hiking enthusiasts; the Evangelical church, bell tower, mill and traditions add to the character of the village.
Hiking Trails and Ozdín Castle
The hiking trail from Ozdín leads to Vrch Hrad, which is 589 m high. The route passes through nature with diverse flora and fauna. There is a fire pit next to the shelter along the trail.
Ozdín Castle dates back to the 13th century. The area around its ruins is suitable for hiking and picnics. Access from the Evangelical church is via a walkable forest path; the climb takes about 45 minutes.
When planning, the two figures refer to different things: 589 m is the height of Vrch Hrad, while about 45 minutes is the approximate duration of the climb to the castle. This distinguishes an elevation from the time required without treating the two destinations as the same.
Church and Architectural History
Ozdín's Evangelical church was built in 1813 on the site of a Gothic place of worship dating from the 15th century. Its massive tower has a Gothic core. Inside the church is a Neoclassical altar with a painting of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane by the painter František Gyurkovits. The church thus brings together different historical and art-historical influences.
Another distinctive structure is the wooden bell tower. It was built in 1784 as a work of folk craftsmanship. Together with the church and castle, it forms a focal point of its own, alongside the hiking destinations and local customs.
Local Customs
Local feather-plucking gatherings are held in Ozdín every winter. Participants make feather dusters from the feathers. Hot tea with rum and corn with poppy seeds, nuts or sugar are served. Both the handicraft and specific foods and drinks are part of these winter gatherings.
The Maypole tradition is also observed every year: Maypoles are erected and then taken down in Ozdín. A climb to Vrch Hrad is part of Children's Day. A fire is also lit to mark the end of the Second World War.
The customs can be distinguished by their occasion: the feather-plucking gatherings take place every winter, Maypoles are erected and taken down every year, the climb is part of Children's Day, and the fire is lit to mark the end of the Second World War.
Village Character and Landscape
Ozdín lies in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Ipeľ. The surrounding area has deciduous forests rich in game. A large oak stands below the Evangelical church; its age is estimated at 500 years.
In the village centre, near the municipal office, there is a wooden mill in a stream reinforced with stone. Its central location sets it apart from the forests and hiking areas outside the village centre.
