If you are planning a stay in Tomášovce, the municipality offers two points of reference to help you choose your destination: its location in the Lučenec Basin and its local history. Tomášovce lies in the northern part of the basin, mostly on the right bank of the Krivánsky stream. The municipal area is flat to hilly and lies between 200 and 330 metres above sea level. The area’s natural character includes forest, field and water game, as well as fish.

The location can be viewed on two levels: the basin places Tomášovce in its landscape, while the stream and elevation describe the municipal area more specifically. Together, these features provide a geographical orientation that encompasses the municipality’s location, terrain and natural surroundings.

Historical Traces in Tomášovce

The first historical mention of Tomášovce is found in a charter issued by Béla IV in Zvolen on 3 August 1247. This links the municipality’s history to a specific date, issuer and place of issue. This early written reference should be distinguished from later descriptions of the village.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Matej Bel described Tomášovce as a wealthy and prosperous village belonging to Count Zichy and the Semerovci noble family. Tomášovce was also mostly owned by the estates of Divín and Halič. The charter, Bel’s description and the ownership arrangements offer different perspectives: they concern the first mention, the village’s character at the time and its historical feudal affiliations.

Church, School and Remembrance

The Lutheran church in Tomášovce stands essentially on the site of an earlier church, which was destroyed on 20 January 1945. The Lutheran church was consecrated on 30 September 1995. The destruction of the earlier building and the later consecration were two separate events; their connection through the site links them in the local history.

The Lutheran school building is also one of the municipality’s historical landmarks: it dates from 1622. The school and church offer different ways to explore the history of the place. The school building is notable for its date, while the church’s history can be understood through the earlier building, its destruction and the later consecration.

A memorial plaque commemorates Daniel Mazárius, the local pastor; it was unveiled on the 250th anniversary of his martyrdom. Another memorial plaque commemorates the victims of the First World War. The plaques focus on different things: one is dedicated to a local individual and a specific anniversary, while the other commemorates the victims of war.

Crafts and Daily Life

Historic local crafts included pottery and pipe-making; residents also worked their fields. These place craft activities and field work side by side as two aspects of life in Tomášovce in the past. They complement the history of the churches and buildings with activities that were part of local life. Together with the charter, Matej Bel’s description and the memorial plaques, they present a picture that encompasses historical events as well as local work and remembrance.
