Divín brings together a variety of themes: the history of the castle, the architecture of Zichy Manor House, local history at the museum and the landscape around Ružiná Reservoir. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your own interests, whether in architectural history, religious art or nature. Each historic site tells its own chapter in the history of the municipality.

Castle, Manor House and Church Architecture

An important historic landmark is Divín Castle. In 1559, the Hungarian Diet ordered it to be repaired and converted into a fortress against the Ottomans. Zichy Manor House also has a clearly dated construction history: Imrich III Balassa had it built as a Renaissance manor house in 1670. The fortified building has an approximately square ground plan and four corner bastions. Its layout and bastions give it a distinctly different architectural form from the castle, whose conversion into a defensive structure is the main focus of the surviving historical accounts.

Another historic stop is All Saints’ Church. In 1657, the nave of the original Gothic church was extended. At the same time, the entire church grounds were enclosed by a defensive wall with inward-facing corner bastions. The building extension and fortification of the grounds were thus part of the same historic transformation. In the cemetery on the south side of the castle hill stands the Chapel of St. Anne, below the castle ruins and directly in front of the former castle gate. Indulgences were granted to the chapel in 1780. The indulgence celebrations are still held annually, usually on the weekend closest to St. Anne’s feast day.

The chapel’s interior furnishings offer another art-historical focus: it contains a Rococo altar with an oil painting of Joachim and Anne, as well as a vaulted-ceiling fresco on the theme of “Regnum Marianum.” It depicts St. Stephen presenting the royal crown to the Virgin Mary. In addition to the church’s architectural history, visitors interested in religious art will find another specific detail from local history here.

Museum and Local Culture

The Museum of the History of Divín is housed in Zichy Manor House. A presenter accompanies the visit, which includes short animations about Divín Castle in the 17th century and Zichy Manor House at the beginning of the 18th century. The museum visit thus brings together two distinct historical landmarks: the castle and the Renaissance manor house.

The permanent exhibitions cover Divín Castle, the history of the manor house, local history, national cultural monuments, and the nature of Divín and its surroundings. Other topics include hunting trophies, tile art and mining. Workshop exhibitions focus on local pottery, woodcarving, stonemasonry and blacksmithing. The subjects range from architectural and local history to nature, crafts and regional activities. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would prefer to see mainly the historic buildings or learn about several aspects of the municipality at the museum.

Ružiná Reservoir, Javor and Trails

Ružiná Reservoir lies within the cadastral areas of Divín and Ružiná and is used for sports and recreation. It is designated as a fishery for non-trout waters and serves as a nesting site for many protected waterbird species. In the area around Divín, visitors can rent boats, windsurfing boards and other sports equipment at the reservoir. The reservoir therefore combines recreational use with natural features, without making these themes interchangeable.

From the hill where Divín Castle stands, there are views of the nearby reservoir and the wider surroundings. Mount Javor is also within the cadastral area of Divín. At 821 metres above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Lučenec District. These details offer different perspectives on the landscape: the view from the castle hill over the surrounding area and a prominent high point in the district.

Two routes are described for planning a walk: a red-marked hiking trail leads from Divín to Divín Castle, and there is also a loop trail around the castle. One route has the castle as its destination, while the other goes around it. No information is provided about duration or difficulty, so plan your walk according to your own needs and local conditions.

Sundial at the Parish House

Another historic detail is the Baroque parish house next to the church. It is best known for the sundial with a chronogram on its façade, installed in 1761. Its date and design make the sundial a specific reference point for architectural and local history. Together with the castle, manor house, church and chapel, it shows how many different historical themes come together in Divín.
