Rapovce – Thermal Spa, Nature and History
Accommodation in Rapovce
Rapovce offers several clear points of interest to help you plan your trip: a thermal spa at the site of a borehole, a stop on the Lučenec–Ipolytarnóc cycling nature trail, a protected area along the Ipeľ River, and historic buildings. This makes it easy to explore the town according to your interests. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Rapovce, start by considering what matters most to you: the thermal spa, cycling, nature or architectural history.
Thermal Spa and Geological Background
A thermal spa with an access road is currently located at the site of the borehole. In 2026, the municipality announced that an organized visit would include outdoor pools and an outdoor soaking pool for relaxation. If you’re planning to visit the thermal spa, check in advance whether visits are currently being offered.
The borehole reaches a final depth of 1,501.2 metres; at a depth of 775 metres, it encountered Mesozoic limestone dating from the Middle to Late Triassic. Rapovce is so far the only place in the Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark where Mesozoic rocks have been confirmed. The two depth figures refer to different things: 1,501.2 metres is the final depth of the borehole, while 775 metres is the depth at which the limestone was encountered. This gives the site a distinctive geological connection to the thermal spa.
Nature and Cycling
The Horný tok Ipľa protected area also includes the cadastral territory of Rapovce. It is a linear protected area along a watercourse, with adjoining riverside vegetation. Much of it lies within the Poiplie Natura 2000 site and it connects to the Stredný tok Ipľa protected area. For trip planning, the key features here are the watercourse, riverside vegetation and the wider network of protected areas—a different way to experience nature from the cycling nature trail.
Rapovce is a stop on the Cyklistický náučný chodník Lučenec – Ipolytarnóc (Hungary) cycling nature trail. If cycling is your main interest, you can consider this route alongside the thermal spa and the protected area’s natural setting. This gives you different themes to choose from without combining them into a single excursion.
Architectural History in Rapovce
The Church of St. Martin (Kostol sv. Martina) was built in 1764 and altered in 1854 and 1895. It was badly damaged during the Second World War; only the perimeter walls and the main façade survived. Its history can therefore be understood in terms of its construction, later alterations and wartime damage.
The originally Neoclassical Rapovce manor house (Kúria Rapovce) dates from 1768; it was altered in 1889 and 1909. It serves as a Roman Catholic rectory and is in very good condition. If you’re considering a visit, confirm its condition before your trip and check in advance whether visits are possible. Together, the church and the manor house give local history a different focus from the thermal spa, cycling and riverside nature.
