When looking for a hotel for your trip to Lučenec, you can base your choice on two interests: historic urban architecture and museums, or parks and waterside landscapes. The historic center contains a conservation area and several notable buildings; beyond it, parks and trails offer different ways to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike. This lets you focus your stay on the subjects that interest you most.

Historic Center and Architecture

Kubínyiho Square is the historic center and conservation area of Lučenec. The surviving original burghers’ houses and historic buildings include two churches, the Reduta and the town hall. The Reformed Church stands on the north side of the square. Its neo-Gothic style and 64-meter-high tower, completed in 1896, create a different architectural impression from the synagogue: its design combines Byzantine-Oriental and Art Nouveau elements, while a monumental dome dominates the interior.

The synagogue is a national cultural monument and part of Slovakia’s Jewish Heritage Route. In May 2016, following its reconstruction, it opened to the public as a multicultural space; it is also used for cultural and social purposes. Services are held in the Reformed Church. The Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, Lučenec congregation, took over management of the building again in 2005. If you are planning an interior visit, please check current visiting arrangements.

Museums and Art

The town hall houses the Lučenec City Museum and is itself a national cultural monument. Its permanent exhibitions explore various aspects of city life: they cover the history of Lučenec, the life of the burgher class, factory and craft production, and the schools of earlier generations. They also feature living conditions in the first half of the 20th century and works by painter František Gyurkovits.

The Novohrad Museum and Gallery has been housed since 1985 in the protected building of the former county court in the historic center. The institution manages more than 25,000 archaeological, ethnological, historical and gallery collection items. These include folk ceramics, enamel and historic glass; folk ceramics and glass receive particular emphasis. The Július Szabó Memorial House adds an artistic focus to these museum venues: it was established in 2008 in the villa by the park where the artist lived. Works dating up to the 1960s are displayed there, covering a range of themes and techniques.

Parks, Trails and Water

The city park covers 17 hectares and is laid out in three garden styles. A walking trail and two cycling routes run through it, connecting the park with the surrounding region. Two recreation areas and two cycling routes totaling 10.15 kilometers are open to visitors in the Lučenec Forest Park. One of these routes includes a 360-meter educational trail with three stops and information boards. The length of the educational trail refers to one section; it should not be confused with the combined length of the two cycling routes.

The city forest park has Nordic walking routes of 1.0 and 3.0 kilometers, which people of all ages can try. The two route lengths offer a useful comparison when planning your walk. The Ľadovo Water Reservoir on the Tuhárský potok in the cadastral area of Lučenec is a separate destination: it covers 26.2 hectares and is used for recreation and sport fishing in summer.

Another route leads from the city park through Lučenec–Ľadovo Park and other places to Ipolytarnóc. Together with the cycling routes through the city park and in the forest park, this offers a choice of different route lengths and itineraries.
