Horná Lehota lies at an altitude of 640 metres below the Ďumbier ridge in the Low Tatras. Local history and cultural heritage take centre stage: Hrádok, the Samo Chalupka Memorial Room and the churches represent different chapters in the area’s history. The natural surroundings of Nízke Tatry add another dimension to this historical perspective. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on historical landmarks or on the landscape.

Location and landscape

The cadastral area of Horná Lehota is part of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 protected area. Coniferous forest habitats predominate in this protected area, supplemented by meadows and pastures. This means the destination can be understood not only in terms of the Ďumbier ridge but also through its connection to the protected area. If your plans focus more on the landscape than on architectural history, this offers a second way to explore Horná Lehota.

Hrádok and the nature trail

Hrádok is a hillfort complex and a protected cultural monument. As a settlement and trading centre, it formed part of the system of hillforts in Horehronie. Its location can be understood from its defensive features: ramparts protect it on three sides, while a rocky cliff guards the northwest side. This combination illustrates the connection between the elevated site and its defences.

A nature trail leads from Horná Lehota to Hrádok. The “Kelti na Horehroní” nature trail is about 3.5 kilometres long and can start at the exhibition of the same name in the village centre. Check trail conditions before setting out. The trail links a starting point in the village with the archaeological site, giving your plans a practical focus if you are interested in Hrádok.

Samo Chalupka and the memorial room

Samo Chalupka was born in Horná Lehota and served there as a Lutheran pastor from 1840 until his death. The Samo Chalupka Memorial Room is housed in a former Lutheran school building. Its exhibition includes ethnographic material about the lives of the people of Horná Lehota and the surrounding area, as well as materials about Chalupka’s life and work. It thus connects local history with literary and biographical history.

Visitors must book in advance by telephone; the minimum group size is five people. Check the visitor arrangements before you arrive and take the booking requirement into account when planning.

Churches and architectural history

The Roman Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel is a Baroque church from the second half of the 17th century and is considered a national cultural monument. By contrast, the Lutheran church in Horná Lehota is a Neoclassical building dating from 1845; it was restored after a fire in 1872. Comparing the two takes you from a Baroque church of the 17th century to a Neoclassical building of the 19th century, bringing two distinct architectural periods into focus. The bell tower in Horná Lehota has a wooden upper structure dating from 1789.

Other interests and trip planning

The local vampire legend is also part of the area’s cultural heritage: the “Prdimuch” escape room presents it through an audiovisual display in a cinema room. For a different kind of exploration, the cycling route to Vajskovský Waterfall starts in Horná Lehota. The section leading to the source of Samo Chalupka follows an asphalt road with a moderate incline. Check route conditions before setting off. When choosing between the nature trail and the cycling route, you can decide based on their different destinations: Hrádok represents the area’s archaeological history, while the waterfall is the focus of the cycling route.
