Dolná Lehota is located in the valley of the Vajskovský stream and in the protection zone of the Low Tatras National Park. Hiking trails, protected natural areas, seasonal activities and a rich local history give trips a range of different focuses. Notable natural attractions include the Skalka National Nature Reserve and the trails in the Vajskovská Valley.

Skalka’s Natural Environment

The Skalka National Nature Reserve covers 2,659.81 hectares of habitats ranging from the montane to the alpine zone. It was designated in 1997; parts of the reserve lie within the cadastral areas of Jasenie and Dolná Lehota. Alpine plant communities are found in the summit areas of Skalka, at an elevation of 1,980 metres. The municipality of Dolná Lehota also lies in the protection zone of the Low Tatras National Park.

Wildlife is also part of Skalka’s natural character: Tatra chamois, marmots, brown bears, lynxes and red deer are found in the area. These details encompass different animal species and habitats, from montane to alpine elevations. For travellers interested in nature, Skalka offers a specific point of interest, but this does not mean that any particular wildlife sighting is guaranteed.

Hiking Trails and Waterfall

An approximately 2 km hiking trail leads from Pálenica to the Vajskovský Waterfall. It is located at an elevation of around 1,200 metres and plunges 9 metres over a rugged rock face. Both the Vajskovská Valley nature trail and the green-marked hiking trail end at the waterfall. As access conditions may vary seasonally, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The nature trail connects nature with local history: its first information board, at Dve vody, covers the history of mining, particularly antimony mining in the area, and commemorates an avalanche in nearby Kulichova Valley. In addition to hiking, the Vajskovská Valley is suitable for cycling. Access to the Medveďou cestičkou nature trail is via turnoffs from the main Dolná Lehota–Krpačovo and Krpačovo–Tále roads. The trail covers historical, mining, Pro Silva, forestry and hunting topics.

Activities in Krpačovo and in Winter

Part of the Krpačovo recreation centre lies within the municipality of Dolná Lehota; swimming and boating are available there. Winter brings a range of additional activities: Dolná Lehota offers extensive cross-country skiing excursions, while Krpačovo has artificially snow-covered ski slopes with a stated total length of 7 km. Local snow conditions may vary, so they are a practical factor to consider when planning.

Local History and Cultural Sites

The settlement of Dolná Lehota was founded in 1358 on the estate of Ľupča by Petrík, an hereditary bailiff from Predajná. The history of mining is also part of the village’s development: after local mining resumed in the 19th century, antimony ore was processed in Vajsková. From the 18th to the 20th century, Dolná Lehota was also one of the so-called lace-making villages.

The Neoclassical Chapel of St John the Baptist dates from 1818. A church dedicated to St John the Baptist was built in 1914; its interior features a mural painted in 1915 by the distinguished Spiš painter Jozef Hanula. At Črmné, on the road to Krpačovo, a SNP memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Second World War. A memorial in Kulichova Valley commemorates the avalanche disaster of 1956, in which sixteen forestry workers lost their lives.

From Banská Bystrica, you can reach Dolná Lehota via Podbrezová and a turnoff through Lopej. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can plan around the themes that interest you most: nature and hiking, seasonal activities or local history.
