Štiavnické Bane can be explored through two clear themes: the history of mining and water management, and sacred architecture. Several educational trails differ in subject, number of stops and, in some cases, length, elevation gain or walking time. There is also a church with a monastery building, a calvary and a protected cultural landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Štiavnické Bane, your planned travel focus can be a useful starting point.

Educational Trails on Mining, Water and Nature

The Piargsky chodník is 5.3 km long and has nine information boards. They provide information about the area's most significant mining structures, including shafts and adits, as well as ore processing. Mining history is therefore the main focus of this educational trail.

Water management is the focus of another trail: at 16 stops, the Piargsky vodohospodársky systém educational trail explains the features of the mining water management system in one section of the Piarg group of water reservoirs. By contrast, the Ökológia piargskych tajchov educational trail focuses on biological life and the related water quality of selected reservoirs. It has five stops and starts at the main dam of the Veľká Richňava reservoir.

These themes distinguish the trails in specific ways: mining structures and ore processing, historical water management, or ecological relationships. The Ökológia piargskych tajchov trail can be completed on foot in two to three hours; walking time may vary depending on conditions.

The Piarg water management educational trail has a long and a short option. The long route is 15,110 m long with an elevation gain of 100 m; the short route is 10,350 m long with an elevation gain of 85 m. The length and elevation gain can therefore be compared directly for both options, while the figures given describe each route.

Water Engineering as Technical Heritage

The Veľká Windšachtská reservoir was built between 1712 and 1715 and is one of the first four reservoirs in the area of present-day Štiavnické Bane. It is an integral part of the Banská Štiavnica water management system. The system has been preserved here in an authentic form and in its original extent, with only minor local alterations or damage. A decision dated 1 February 2024 states that the reservoir was being used for recreational purposes at that time.

Church, Monastery and Calvary

The Church of St. Joseph and its associated monastery complex at Vindšachta were built between 1735 and 1754. The church is a Baroque, single-nave building with a projecting tower. A two-storey monastery building adjoins its north side. These features show the church's architectural form and its connection to the monastery as distinct aspects of the ensemble.

The church organ was built in 1754; the well-known organ builder Martin Podkonický is believed to have been its maker. The Štiavnické Bane–Horná Roveň Calvary also brings together different historical dates: it has six stations dating from 1754 and leads to a crucifixion group dating from 1730.

World Heritage and Geopark

The Štiavnické Bane urban conservation area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity”. Other components include the Banská Štiavnica urban conservation area and the protected historic zone of Hodruša-Hámre. In addition, the municipality of Štiavnické Bane lies wholly or partly within the core zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark. These designations place the specific educational trails, buildings and water structures in the broader context of protected cultural and technical heritage.
