Mining history and the landscape of the Štiavnické vrchy shape the travel experience in Banská Štiavnica District. Banská Štiavnica is known for its historic urban architecture and museums; the Banskoštiavnický Geopark draws attention to the wider area and its mining traces. For your travel plans, it is therefore worth treating city sightseeing and the landscape as distinct priorities.

Mining history in Banská Štiavnica

The preserved town centre of Banská Štiavnica took shape in the 16th century. Its buildings include late Gothic and Renaissance burghers’ houses, the town hall and the late Gothic Church of St. Catherine. The town’s history can also be traced through the development of its institutions: Europe’s first Mining and Forestry Academy was founded here in 1762.

The Kammerhof was built in stages from the 12th century onwards and became the seat of the chief chamber count’s office in the 16th century. It presents the history of mining, technology and miners’ everyday lives. The information centre of the Slovak Mining Museum is also located in the Kammerhof. Its offerings include minerals, souvenirs, prestigious publications and informational materials; the selection may change.

The Banské múzeum v prírode presents the development of ore mining in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century and offers guided tours through original mine areas. Its surface exhibition combines technical mining monuments with a geological exhibition comprising 70 stations. If you plan to take a tour, check the current visitor information in advance.

Museums, buildings and the Calvary

The two castles in Banská Štiavnica also offer different points of interest: the Old Castle serves as a museum and includes exhibitions on pipes and shooting targets, among other things. The New Castle is also used as a museum; one exhibition there focuses on the battles against the Ottomans. It also offers a lovely view of the town.

Above the town lies Banskoštiavnická Kalvária, an extensive Baroque complex on the hillside. It comprises three churches, nineteen chapels and a cross with a sculptural group of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The visitor route begins in the lower part of the site, passes the chapels to the Upper Church and then descends back down the other side of the hill. This route links the individual stops in a clear sequence, while reflecting that the Calvary complex is more than just a single building.

The Banskoštiavnický Geopark is located in Banská Štiavnica District and covers 374 km². The Geopark contains a total of 156 sites. The Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area also extends into the Geopark.

A prominent geographical landmark for the countryside part of your trip is Sitno: at 1,009 metres, it is the best-known and highest mountain in the Štiavnické vrchy. Together with the mining relics, it offers a different perspective from the buildings and collections in Banská Štiavnica. So when looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether the town’s history and museums or the Geopark landscape better suit your travel plans.
