Hronská Dúbrava on the Hron: Hiking and Local History

Hronská Dúbrava lies on the Hron River between the Kremnické vrchy and Štiavnické vrchy mountain ranges. The historic center is in the upper part of the municipality; this part of the village is now used mainly for recreation. You can therefore get to know the destination both through its riverside setting and its older center. The village’s history and the various hiking options provide useful starting points for planning your stay.

Local History from a Bronze Age Find to the Railway

The first surviving mention of Hronská Dúbrava in archival documents dates from 1388. A bronze spear found during railway construction work in the municipality dates to the Middle Bronze Age, from 1500 to 700 BC. The find points to a period far earlier than the archival mention of the village; the spear is kept in the archaeological collection in Martin. The railway is also part of the village’s history: service on the Hronská Dúbrava–Levice line began on October 27, 1896.

Chapel in the Upper Part of the Village

The Chapel of the Motherhood of the Virgin Mary (Materstva Panny Márie) stands in the upper part of Hronská Dúbrava. It was built during the totalitarian period despite pressure from the regime of the time. A Holy Mass is celebrated there each year on the anniversary of its consecration. Hiking: Routes and Distances

A hike over the hills of Demian and Suť starts in Hronská Dúbrava. In addition, two hiking trails maintained by KST connect the village with other destinations: Route 8507 runs between Hronská Dúbrava and Dubové and is 11.7 kilometers long. Route 5531 links Šášovské Podhradie and Hronská Dúbrava over 14.6 kilometers. By total length, Route 8507 is 2.9 kilometers shorter. Route 5531 also passes the “TRAŤ MLÁDEŽE” inscription, one of the monuments along the trail.

You can also choose to start a nature trail in Hronská Dúbrava. This starting point is 15 minutes from the railway station. You can walk the nature trail independently in either direction; it is accessible year-round. The options described therefore differ in whether you prefer a route between named places, a hike over Demian and Suť, or a nature trail.
