Kopernica: Hiking Trails, Views and History
Accommodation in Kopernica
For a stay in Kopernica, the landscape, marked trails and architectural history offer concrete points of interest. The selection ranges from two described hiking routes and a 49-kilometre cycling loop to a Gothic church with a Baroque high altar. This lets you first decide whether your trip will focus more on outdoor activities or on exploring the area’s history.
Landscape and Trails Around Kopernica
Kopernica lies in the western group of the Kremnické vrchy, in a narrow, long valley of the Kopernický potok. The village is part of the Kremnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. As a result of intensive mining activity, the forests above the village are still criss-crossed by a dense network of roads and trails. The history of land use is therefore part of the character of this woodland landscape, along with the opportunities to explore it on foot. Deer and roe deer are not uncommon in the surrounding forests, although a sighting cannot be expected on any individual outing.
South of Kopernica lies Horná Klapa, a rocky outcrop that serves as a natural viewpoint. The municipal route list published in 2016 names two marked hiking trails: Kopernica–Lutila–Dolná Klapa–Jazierko Slobodné is marked with local signage; Kopernica–Slaská–Jazierko Slobodné is also a marked hiking trail. According to their names, both routes lead to Jazierko Slobodné, but they differ in the intermediate places listed. The route information dates from 2016; check the signage on site before choosing a trail. This gives you both a specific landscape destination and two clearly named routes to consider as you plan.
Cycling Loop and Route Selection
The Pohronsko–kremnický cycling loop is 49 km long, classified as SPORT, and suitable for road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes. Its described route runs from Lúčky via Kopernica to Lutila. The loop includes another climb above Kopernica, from where there are views of the surrounding landscape. You can use different details to choose a route: for the hiking trails, the place names along the way are helpful; for the cycling loop, you can also consider its total length, classification and the types of bikes listed. This makes it possible to assess the cycling trip using specific details, while the hiking routes are described by their respective courses.
Church and Preserved Houses
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin the Bishop is the oldest historic building in Kopernica. The Gothic structure dates from the 13th century; the high altar of St. Martin dates from 1743 and is designed in the Baroque style. The church and its altar thus reflect two distinct periods: the building’s construction in the 13th century and the design of the high altar in the 18th century. Some typical German houses with covered passageways have been preserved in Kopernica to this day. They add another traditional architectural form of the village to the picture of its religious architecture.
