Veľké Pole lies between the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges. When planning a stay, the protected landscape, hiking and cycling routes, and local history offer different points of interest. The route details vary in their destinations, lengths and walking times.

Natural Landscape and Settlement Pattern

The cadastral area of Veľké Pole lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. The protected limestone cave Veľkopolská jaskyňa and the Sokolec a Skala Nature Reserve are also located there. These names add to the landscape context of the municipality; when planning your trip, it is worth considering the natural area and marked routes as separate topics.

Together with 13 other municipalities, Veľké Pole forms part of one of the few remaining historic landscape complexes in Slovakia. The settlement area is described as scattered, dispersed, or štál-type. The term describes a settlement pattern spread across the landscape and adds a historical dimension to the region. This puts the cultural landscape, as well as individual buildings, in focus.

Hiking around Veľké Pole

The Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Veľké Pole and is marked in red. The 34.1-kilometre route runs from Veľké Pole to Handlová; its length may change if route managers revise its course. A red-marked hiking trail also leads to the summit of Vtáčnik from the municipal office in Veľké Pole; the estimated walking time is approximately four hours. The actual time varies depending on conditions and your pace.

For planning purposes, these details should not be treated as equivalent: 34.1 kilometres is the length of the Ponitrianska magistrála between the places mentioned; the approximate walking time refers to the trail from the municipal office to the summit of Vtáčnik. This helps you assess route length and time required in line with your own hiking plans.

Cycling Route 2317 “Penhýbel–Vtáčnik”

The blue-marked cycling route 2317 “Penhýbel–Vtáčnik” starts in Veľké Pole and ends at the summit of the Vtáčnik mountain range. It is 15.2 kilometres long and classified as an EXPERT MTB route. The classification is an important point of reference when planning your ride. As route conditions may change, check the current route before setting out.

Churches, Monuments and Local History

The town’s history dates back to the founding of a monastery in 1395: the Pauline Order from Lefantovce founded a monastery in Veľké Pole at that time. The Roman Catholic church was built around 1511 in the Late Gothic style. These two dates provide a historical context for the town without referring to the same building or period.

In the centre stands the monument “Pomník padlým vojakom” near the municipal office. It commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War. By the cultural centre is the plague column known as “Morový stĺp,” erected in 1787 as a sign that the plague had struck the municipality. In front of the church stands a chapel built in 1792, commemorating the severe hailstorm associated with the destruction of the entire village.

The local cemetery grounds are also part of the town’s history: next to the funeral home stands an oak-wood bell tower; the bell was cast in 2006. Another historical trace is Veľké Pole’s mining tradition. Silver and lead were mined here before the mines were later closed. Together, these places and events show different aspects of local history—from church buildings and public memorials to mining.
