Tekovská Breznica offers a range of reasons to visit: the village’s oldest church, the ruins of Breznica Castle, and volcanic and rocky landscapes in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether local history, trails to the castle ruins or geological features are your main focus.

Church and Castle: Historical Traces

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is Tekovská Breznica’s oldest monument. It was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style on elevated ground above the municipality. Its construction history includes other notable dates: the church was enlarged with an extension in 1912–1913 and extensively reconstructed in 1993.

Breznica Castle was a relatively large castle above Tekovská Breznica. It was built in the second half of the 13th century by the Archbishop of Esztergom. The remains of the walls of the castle’s core are visible. The ruins are listed as an immovable national cultural monument in the Central List of the Slovak Monuments Fund; the registration number is ÚZPF 1273.

Trails to the Castle Ruins

The marked green hiking trail to Breznica Castle leads from Tekovská Breznica railway station through the village. The educational trail to the ruins leads to a viewpoint by the castle and is a less steep alternative to the green trail. This difference can help you choose your route: the green trail is described as starting at the railway station and passing through the village, while the educational trail leads to the viewpoint and is less steep than the green trail.

Watchtower Luchtov is another historical site. Only the perimeter walls of the square tower remain. It probably served as a defensive and signal tower, warning the population and the castle guards. There is no signposted trail to the tower, and access is considered relatively difficult. Check local conditions before visiting.

Volcanic and Rocky Landscapes

Nearby Putikov vŕšok is evidence of the most recent volcanic activity in Slovakia and features a volcanic-exhalative channel. A protected natural monument covering 21.06 hectares, it was designated in 1996. Putikov vŕšok is also home to Sesame Cave, a 26-metre-long volcanic vent through which volcanic gases escape during an eruption.

Sokolia skala lies southeast of Tekovská Breznica. It is a rock face at 415 metres above sea level, situated above the ruins of Breznica Castle at Tomanovom rígli. The surrounding area thus brings together different landscape features: the volcanic vent at Putikov vŕšok and the elevated rock face.

Regional Context

The regional context is also defined geographically: the eastern part of Tekovská Breznica’s cadastral area lies within the protection zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity”. This connection adds a regional perspective to the local architectural and natural monuments.
