Vaslui can be explored through different themes: the county museum brings together archaeological, historical, and art collections, while medieval architectural history can be seen at other sites. Copou Park adds a public dendrological garden. This lets you plan cultural history and urban green space as separate highlights.

Collections at the County Museum

The departments at the “Ștefan cel Mare” County Museum range from archaeology and medieval and contemporary history to ethnography and fine arts. The museum also includes a humor salon named after “Constantin Tănase.” Its collections include Cucuteni pottery and the medieval Schinetea treasure. Another collection is devoted to contemporary art: the “Dr. Constantin Teodorescu” collection comprises 170 paintings, graphic works, and sculptures, displayed in five museum halls. The arrangement of individual works may change.

Medieval Architectural History

Curtea Domnească is a medieval complex that developed in three phases. The first dates to the time of Alexandru cel Bun in the first half of the 15th century. The second falls in the era of Ștefan cel Mare, who also built the Church of Saint John the Baptist during this period. The third phase began no earlier than the middle of the 16th century. The Orthodox Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist, also known as Biserica Domnească of Vaslui, was founded by Prince Ștefan cel Mare in 1490.

Between 2011 and 2014, one of the Ștefanian houses was reconstructed at its original site, uncovered through archaeological excavations. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Casa Ghica and the Heroes’ Cemetery

Casa Ghica is the oldest secular building in Vaslui. The house was built before 1818 in the Neoclassical style by Logofăt Constantin Ghica, his daughter Elena Șubin, and Russian and Polish architects. Today, Casa Ghica serves as a kindergarten and is located at Strada Ștefan cel Mare 60. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Vaslui Heroes’ Cemetery, associated with the War of Independence and the First World War, contains 70 individual graves and a central monument with an ossuary. Historical documents refer to the cemetery as the Mausoleum of Peneș Curcanul. The Heroes’ Cemetery and the central monument with ossuary are listed in Romania’s updated list of historic monuments. The cemetery is at Strada Eternității 42.

Copou Park as a Green Highlight

Copou Park, also known as Copou Dendrological Park, lies in the north of Vaslui. It is a public dendrological garden covering about 11 hectares. “Dendrological” refers to trees and woody plants, distinguishing the park’s focus from the museum collections and historic buildings. If you would like to include both cultural history and green spaces in your stay, the park makes a distinct addition to your itinerary.
