Natural Area and Nature Reserve

The floodplain, forest reserve and local history give Balteni a range of themes to consider when planning your trip. Nature, hiking and the parish church are complemented by a named tourist route and a railway connection.

Balteni’s forest and botanical reserve lies in the Bârlad floodplain; locals know the area as Dumbrava Bălteni. It covers 18.8 hectares and is a nationally significant nature reserve in IUCN Category IV. If the area is important to your plans, check the current figure.

The ROSCI0158 Pădurea Bălteni–Hârboanca site was designated for habitat type 91Y0, Dacian oak-hornbeam forests. This habitat type covers 100 percent of the site and also accounts for more than 15 percent of its national occurrence. The protection and conservation program for the Pădurea Bălteni nature reserve includes two mammal species: the European hamster and the European ground squirrel.

Hiking and Tourist Route

Bălteni Forest is among the local nature reserves and is associated with protected tree species and hiking. A designated tourist route runs via Vaslui, Zăpodeni, Bălteni, Brăhăşoaia, Rebricea, Rafaila, Cozmeşti and Deleşti, and returns to Vaslui. The route order places Bălteni after Zăpodeni and before Brăhăşoaia. These are different considerations for your trip planning: the hiking connection relates to the forest, while the route describes a tourist itinerary through several places.

Church History and Early Local History

Balteni was first mentioned in writing on 15 October 1491, during the reign of Ștefan cel Mare. The parish church of Balteni is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and Saint Hierarch Nicholas. Construction began on 25 September 1844, and the church was consecrated on 6 December 1847. The 1491 date refers to the written mention of the village; the church dates relate to its construction in the 19th century.

The present-day parish church is considered the third church in the community’s history. In the earthquake of 10 November 1940, the parish church split into four parts; the tower and bells collapsed, but none of the bells was damaged. The first mention of the village and the church dates therefore belong to different periods; the earthquake damage adds an event from the 20th century to the church’s history.
