Călimănești combines a striking river landscape with Roman history, monasteries and the development of a spa resort. The Olt, the Olt Gorge and the Cozia Massif each provide a distinct reference point in the landscape; there are also buildings and artworks from several centuries. If you are looking for hotels in Călimănești, you could first consider whether nature and mountain scenery or cultural history should be the focus of your trip. This can help you choose a destination based on the themes that interest you most.

Landscape and trails

Within the administrative area of the town of Călimănești, the Olt forms the most spectacular section of the Turnu Roșu–Câineni Gorge. The Călimănești-Căciulata spa resort lies at the entrance to the spectacular Olt Gorge and borders the Cozia Massif. The river, gorge and mountain massif each have their own place in the landscape.

Cozia National Park is a protected area with landscape, geological and geomorphological, floristic, faunal and forest values. Possible activities in the national park include mountain hiking, scientific tourism, extreme sports, rest and recreation. The range of options combines active pursuits with scientific tourism and relaxation. If you are planning a specific activity, it is best to check the conditions beforehand.

Forest roads, as well as marked and unmarked hiking trails, run along the Păușa stream and offer ways to access higher mountain areas. When choosing a specific hike, it is therefore worth checking the trail’s markings.

Roman heritage and monasteries

Arutela brings Roman history to the Olt: the fort lies in Poiana Bivolari near Păușa, within Călimănești. It is a Category A monument, dating to 137–138 AD. As part of a defensive line, it protected traffic through the Olt Valley towards Transylvania. Arutela thus links the history of fortification with travel through the valley.

Cozia Monastery, in the Cozia–Căciulata locality within Călimănești, is a Category A monument dating to 1388–1391. It preserves Byzantine wall paintings of immeasurable value to Romania’s and Europe’s cultural and artistic heritage.

Ostrov Monastery, on Ostrov Island in the Olt, dates from 1520–1522. Inside, it preserves wall paintings from 1760. The two dates refer to different things: the period from which the monastery dates and the year of the wall paintings.

At the foot of Cozia Mountain and not far from the Olt lies Turnu Monastery; it is 600 m from the railway station of the same name. Around the Turneanu Ridge in the Cozia Massif, several hermitages and cells cut into the rock have survived to this day. The monastery and these remains offer different insights into the area’s religious history.

Spa and railway-station architecture

The central spa bathhouse was built between 1881 and 1886. After its renovation in 1911–1912, it became known as the central pavilion building of the spa resort: Pavilionul Central. Călimănești railway station also adds to the architectural history: completed in 1899, it is considered a notable building reminiscent of the railway station in Sinaia. The architectural history thus encompasses not only monasteries but also spa and railway-station architecture.
