Discover Bucovăț Commune
Accommodation in Bucovăț Commune
Bucovăț Commune lies in a quiet lowland landscape along the Bega River, near Timișoara. You can explore the commune through several distinct themes: a historical collection of household items, the architectural history of Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe, the riverside landscape, and a cycling route that passes through Bucovăț. These details can help you decide whether cultural history, botanical collections, or cycling should be the focus of your trip.
Arboretum and lowland landscape
The Bazoș Arboretum is also located in a flat alluvial plain, at the transition between the floodplains of the Bega and Timiș rivers. The grounds cover 62 hectares. Its collections include 776 taxa of woody plants from North America and Asia. With 19 species, the arboretum also has Romania’s largest oak collection. Its diverse plant collections are complemented by a clearly quantified focus on oaks.
The first landscaping work at the arboretum took place from 1909 to 1914 at the initiative of its owner at the time, Count Ludovic Ambrosie. Today’s botanical collection and this early landscaping phase offer two different points of interest for nature and history enthusiasts: the plant collections and the site’s origins.
Household and church history
The Bucovăț Commune Memorial House preserves original furniture, tools, and clothing. Visitors can see what an ordinary household in the Banat lowlands looked like. The focus is on objects from everyday life. If you plan to include the house in your itinerary, check in advance whether it is open to visitors.
The church’s history also offers specific dates. In 1790, the church in Bucovăț acquired liturgical books printed in Blaj (Ardeal). Construction of the present-day Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe in Bucovăț began on July 20, 1935, and was completed by Christmas that same year. The current towers were added later, between 1989 and 1993, by Father Ioan Drăgan. These details distinguish the earlier purchase of books from the construction and expansion history of the present-day church.
Cycling route and directions
Eco Timiș Cycling Route 4, which is 20 kilometers long, passes through Bucovăț on its way to Bazoșu Nou Dendrological Park. Another point of reference is the 3.6-kilometer road distance between Bucovăț and Bazoșu Nou along DJ 609F. These figures refer to different routes: 20 kilometers is the length of the cycling route, while 3.6 kilometers is the stated road distance. Before setting out on a cycling trip, it is worth checking current route conditions.
National Road 6 and the Remetea Mare–Bucovăț–Bazoșu Nou county road are useful landmarks when traveling to the Bazoș Arboretum. Remetea Mare railway station is 6 kilometers away. If you plan to travel by train, check current schedules in advance.
Historical traditions
Livestock farming and beekeeping were among Bucovăț’s former occupations. This historical perspective complements the everyday objects in the Bucovăț Commune Memorial House with economic activities that helped shape the community’s past life.
April 23 is given as the date of the Ruga in Bucovăț. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the program for the relevant year before finalizing your plans.
