Sinaia – Castles, Monastery Traditions and Ski Resort
Accommodation in Sinaia
When looking for a hotel in Sinaia, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the city combines royal architectural history and museums with winter sports, cycling routes and places with religious traditions. The following distinctions offer clues to the themes you may want to focus on during your stay.
Castles and museums with a history of their own
Peleș Castle was built between 1873 and 1914 and served as a royal residence from 1883 to 1947. It has operated as a museum again since 1990. Pelișor Castle highlights different periods: it was built between 1899 and 1902 as a gift for the Crown Prince. Its interior reflects the Art Nouveau style chosen by Queen Maria; the castle opened to visitors in February 1993.
George Enescu’s house also brings together architectural and cultural history. It was built between 1923 and 1926 and named Vila Luminiș. It became a memorial house in 1995 and has been a department of the National George Enescu Museum since 2007. The composer’s Ibach grand piano, made in Lausanne, is kept there. Muzeul Sinaia, meanwhile, is housed in Palatul Florescu-Știrbei, built in 1875 and considered the oldest villa in the city. Its exhibitions cover local history as well as notable figures, sports, scouting and nature; there are also temporary exhibitions.
Sinaia Monastery and religious heritage
Sinaia Monastery was founded in 1695 and was the starting point for the development of the city; it therefore dates back to the late 17th century. The old church is built in the Brâncovenesc style, typical of Wallachia at the time. Among the objects on display in the monastery museum is the 1688 Bucharest Bible. The religious museum has operated continuously since it was established and is considered the first museum of its kind in Romania. This also makes it possible to view a visit to the monastery from architectural and historical perspectives.
Ski resort: elevation and piste profile
The Sinaia ski resort reaches an altitude of 2,103 metres on Vârful Furnica and is considered Romania’s highest ski resort. It extends from Cota 2000 to Cota 1000 and also includes Valea Soarelui and Valea Dorului. One specific piste example is Drumul de Vară: this intermediate run goes from Cota 2000 to Cota 1400, is more than three kilometres long and descends 600 metres. The elevation and this route profile offer different points of reference if you are considering making winter sports the focus of your trip. Infrastructure, operations and measurements may change, so check the latest operating information before planning a day of skiing.
Gondola routes and getting around
Gondola Sinaia runs from Cota 1000 to Cota 1400 through a forested area. Gondola Carp runs from Cota 1400 to Cota 2000 through alpine terrain, crossing Valea cu Brazi along the way. The valley station of the Telegondola is at No. 5 Aleea Telegondolei. It can be reached by public transport and by car; there is a dedicated car park at the valley station. Bus route T4 connects Gara and Telegondola and stops at Market DN1. If you plan to use the bus, check the latest timetable before travelling.
Cycling routes, parks and other scenic spots
Bike Resort Sinaia has four purpose-built downhill, all-mountain and XC routes, with a total of about ten kilometres of singletrack and forest trails. The routes are signposted along the trails; difficult sections can be avoided by taking alternative routes. This makes the cycling options clearly distinct from the named ski pistes in terms of the routes they offer.
Dimitrie Ghica Park, laid out in 1881, connects several other cultural landmarks: Sinaia Casino was built in its northern section in 1912 and 1913. The Festivalul orașului Sinaia takes place in the park every autumn. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates. Scenic spots also include Poiana Stânii, an alpine meadow at an altitude of 1,270 metres, and Stânca Sfânta Ana. According to local tradition, the rock served as a retreat for hermits; the clearing at its foot offers views of Sinaia.
