Azuga: Ski Slopes, Mountain Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Azuga
In Azuga, winter sports, mountain hikes and cycling routes sit alongside historic monuments and designated architectural monuments. When planning your stay, you can focus on the slopes, a particular hike, a cycling trip or local history.
Ski Slopes and Winter Activities
The Sorica ski slope is 2,100 m long and rated intermediate. It is homologated by FIS and ANT; facilities include night lighting and artificial snowmaking. Check whether it is operating before your trip, especially if these features matter to your plans.
The Cazacu ski slope is 1,920 m long, also rated intermediate, and has a vertical drop of 530 m. Nearby are cross-country ski trails and a snowboard run with a combined total length of 10 km. These activities are seasonal.
The operator, Azuga Resort, offers online purchases of Telegondola tickets. The Telegondola provides access to the Sorica ski slope and mountain trails. If you plan to take the ride, check ticket sales and operating status in advance.
Mountain Hikes and Events
One mountain route starts at Azuga railway station and leads via Vârful Grecului to Cabana Diham in the Bucegi Mountains. It takes about 2½ hours and is rated intermediate. Another route runs from Azuga via Vârful ClÄbucetul Taurului to Cabana Gârbova in the Baiului Mountains; the stated duration is 3â3½ hours, and the difficulty ranges from intermediate to difficult.
A shorter hike leads from the base of the Sorica ski slope via Captare de ApÄ to Cabana Gârbova. It is marked with a blue dot and takes 1â1½ hours. The time estimates distinguish the three hikes by duration; before setting out, also check the weather and trail conditions, which can vary seasonally.
The Azuga Trail Race mountain running competition has been held in October since 2012 in the Baiului Mountains around the Sorica ski slope in Azuga. If you would like to plan your trip around the competition, check the dates for the relevant year.
Cycling Routes and Landscape
A circular cycling route runs from Azuga along the Sorica ridge, via Baiu Peak, Poiana Čapului, BuČteni, Zamora and Azuga Spital, and back to Azuga. A second loop, rated intermediate, runs through the Azuga Valley and LimbÄČel Valley and also returns to Azuga. The listed waypoints show how differently the two routes can be described. Conditions in alpine terrain and on forest roads can change.
Vegetation zones also provide context for the landscape: forest vegetation extends up to about 1,400â1,500 m. Alpine vegetation begins above the upper tree line, from about 1,600â1,650 m. These elevation ranges are approximate and do not represent precise boundaries.
Monuments and Architectural History
The monument to the heroes of the 1877â1878 War of Independence was erected in central Azuga in 1905. It honors the Eighth DorobanČi Company from Prahova and the fallen sons of the community. The Holy Trinity Church was built in 1902â1903; the royal household paid a large share of its construction costs.
The First World War Heroesâ Cemetery was established in 1920. Covering 2,000 m², it contains 160 soldiersâ crosses and three wooden memorial crosses. Azuga also has houses from the 19th and 20th centuries designated as architectural monuments. These historical themes offer a different focus from activities in the mountains.
