Schitu Tarcău can be explored for your travel planning through two clearly distinct themes: the history and architectural design of the wooden church “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” and the roads and mountain scenery of the Tarcău Valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Schitu Tarcău, you can use these highlights to find your bearings: are monastic history and church architecture your main focus, or would you rather learn about the valley route and challenging mountain trails? Historical dates, the road layout, and hiking times offer different points of reference.

Monastic History and Church Architecture

Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului is first mentioned in a document from March 1832. This date refers to the mention of the monastery; the church was built in 1833. Hieroschemamonk Avramie, together with other donors, is named as its builder. The church was consecrated on July 9, 1833. The mention, construction, and consecration therefore mark different points in the chronology.

The wooden church “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” has a cruciform floor plan and pronounced side apses. The floor plan describes the overall shape of the building; the apses complement it as distinctive structural features on the sides. The church stands in a wide clearing in the rocky Tarcău Valley. Here, a clearly described architectural layout meets an equally specific setting in the landscape. For travelers interested in religious architecture, both the historical sequence and the form of the wooden building are notable points of reference.

The Tarcău Valley and How to Get There

The road through the Tarcău Valley passes through Schitu Tarcău and follows the course of the Tarcău River. Meadows and sheer granite and sandstone walls lie along the route. The road itself is therefore part of the valley’s scenic appeal. To reach Schitul Tarcău, access is 5 km from Bicaz via national road DN15. Traveling in the direction of Bicaz–Piatra Neamț, turn onto local road DC135; from there, it is another 15 km to Schitul Tarcău. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Near Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului are the valley of the Bolovăniş stream, with a waterfall, and a gorge section cut deep into massive sandstone. The area thus offers several different landscapes: the wide clearing and rock walls of the Tarcău Valley, as well as a waterfall and sandstone gorge near the monastery.

Mountain Trails and Regional Highlights

Several challenging mountain trails start at or near Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului. Each of these trails takes at least six hours. This means allowing more time for each trail when planning; also check trail conditions and markings, as these can change.

Further afield is the Goșmanu Forest Reserve, with centuries-old spruces, firs, and beeches. In the area, a forest road branching off to the left leads after 24 kilometers to Vârful Goșmanu, at an elevation of 1,305 meters, and to the forest reserve of the same name. The peak and the reserve represent different destinations: a named mountain summit and a forest area with old coniferous and deciduous trees. The Via Mariae is a section of the European pilgrimage route VIA MARIAE.

The Maraton Tarcău also offers a specific date reference: its fourth edition took place in 2026, with the start and finish at Mănăstirea Schitu Tarcău. If you are considering the race as a reason to travel, check the dates of the relevant edition before making plans.
