Hangu can be explored through two themes: the landscape around Lacul Izvorul Muntelui and its rich religious and local history. Views, church architecture and local traditions give the area its distinct character. When planning your trip, it may therefore be important to decide whether you are considering Hangu primarily for its landscape or its historic sites.

Landscape around Lacul Izvorul Muntelui

From the viewpoint near Hangu, Pionul—a peak or prominent point in the Ceahlău Massif—is reflected in Lacul Izvorul Muntelui. This view depends on the weather and water conditions. It offers a specific point of reference for anyone interested in the mountain and lake landscape.

The road along the lakeshore also offers changing views: the surrounding hills, settlements in the valleys and more distant mountain ridges. The commune of Hangu stretches along the route from Bicaz toward Poiana Teiului beside Lacul Izvorul Muntelui. The lake, valley settlements and mountain ridges are thus among the defining features of the region.

Churches and local history

Hangu’s parish church stands out for its stone, cross-shaped structure and two differently designed towers. An octagonal tower rises above the naos; a larger tower above the porch serves as the bell tower. This description makes the building’s layout clear without treating the two towers as a single, uniform form.

The history of other churches also extends beyond individual buildings. The former church in Gura Hangului was built between 1785 and 1795 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Schitul Sihastru near Hangu was founded as early as the 15th century. Schitul Hangu is dedicated to “Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică” and “Sfântul Cuvios Pahomie.”

A later cathedral in Hangu was built over a period of 30 years and completed and consecrated in 1951. A wooden church from Gura Hangului, dating from 1829, was dismantled beam by beam and moved to Chirițeni above the lake. This building history also shows how places and points of reference within the commune have changed.

A local story of origins is also connected with Casa Audia. The house is located in the Muzeul Național al Satului „Dimitrie Gusti” in Bucharest; Audia, in the commune of Hangu, is given as its place of origin. Hangu’s connection to it thus remains part of the area’s history even beyond the commune.

Traditions and cultural traces

On Calea Mare in the village of Bouleţul Mic stands Movila Călugărului, a mound built up from earth and branches. According to local tradition, passersby place a branch on the monk’s grave, which is still preserved today. Here, a specific place and a traditional custom come together, adding a local story to the landscape.

Another memory is associated with the waters: deep below them lie the ruins of a church that locals call “Hangu Cathedral.” The ruins of the “Catedrala de la Hangu” may be visible only during dry summers or severe winters, when the water level of Lacul Bicaz falls and the lake freezes completely. Their visibility is therefore tied to these particular water and weather conditions.

The area’s cultural history also includes activities beyond individual buildings. An account from 2020 describes Hangu Echo as a children’s band and links its artistic activities to its role as an ambassador for the commune of Hangu. The band took part in the Outlaws Festival and the Festival of Winter Customs and Traditions in Grințies, and performed at various places in the surrounding area.
