A trip to Galesti can focus on architectural and cultural history. Casa Tolnay, churches, historic settlement features and a pilgrimage-style hiking route offer a range of themes to explore.

Cultural Sites and Historical Periods

In Mureş County, Comuna Găleşti is one of the communes with a very high concentration of architectural heritage of national cultural interest. Casa Tolnay in Găleşti is listed as a 17th-century historic monument. The Unitarian Church in Sânvăsii is listed as a 14th- to 15th-century historic monument. The Cetatea de la Găleşti – Singervára fortification is located on a hill south of the former village of Sânvăsii and dates from the Roman and medieval periods.

For a comparison across periods, a house and a church dated to specific centuries can be considered alongside a fortification from Roman and medieval times. The examples differ both in building type and in their historical classification.

Churches and Architecture

The wooden church in Troița has a detached bell tower. Its ground floor is open; above it is a narrow gallery with arches, topped by a steeply pitched roof. The tower can therefore be viewed through its distinct position and articulated design: from the open lower section, up through the gallery, to the roof.

Nyárádszentlászló: History and Landscape

Nyárádszentlászló is a settlement shaped by heritage conservation in the middle Niraj region and administratively belongs to the commune of Găleşti. The Unitarian Church features Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. Wall paintings were uncovered in its Gothic sacristy between 2009 and 2015; they are considered exceptionally valuable in the Transylvanian context. The place is already recorded in the 1332 papal tithe register under the name Sancto Ladislao. The church’s stylistic features and the wall paintings in the sacristy offer two distinct art-historical perspectives on the place.

The Nyomát stream runs through Nyárádszentlászló from north to south. The churchyard contains the trunk of a manna ash, estimated to be 350 to 400 years old. Two lime trees in the churchyard were planted in 1896 to mark the millennium celebration of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 896. The trees have different connections to time: an age is estimated for the ash, while the lime trees are associated with a planting year and a historical occasion. The stream adds a spatial point of reference through the settlement.

Hiking Route and Transport Notice

The Via Unitariana pilgrimage-style hiking camp follows the Niraj to the lower slopes of the Gurghiu Mountains and passes through places including Nyomát and Nyárádszentlászló. Unlike individual churches or monuments, this route focuses on a regional itinerary. The nature of the trail, the direction of the landscape and the named settlements offer different points of reference for the trip. Check the hiking camp’s current dates before making specific plans.

An older transport listing describes public route 020 as a 26 km connection from Târgu Mureș via Acățari to Troița. Before travelling this route, check the current service and timetable.
