Acățari Commune lies on both banks of the middle Niraj and its valley, at the boundary between its upper and lower reaches. The commune is 12 km from Târgu-Mureș. A hilly, partly forested landscape, cultural sites and leisure activities give a stay a variety of focal points. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both the nature-related attractions and the sights and activities in the commune’s different localities.

Landscape and nature along the Niraj

The area is hilly and partly forested. The Niraj has a large floodplain and mostly flat terraces. The local water network also includes the Vețca Canal. Together, the river, valley, floodplain and hills shape the character of the landscape. If you enjoy experiencing different types of scenery, the surroundings offer several nature-related themes to consider when planning your trip.

The commune has valuable, species-rich habitats that support significant bird species, including the lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina) and the European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus). Forests, as well as marsh and aquatic vegetation, also provide habitats for vertebrates and invertebrates whose biology is adapted to the local environment. Acățari’s natural environment thus encompasses both its waterways and its habitats and wildlife.

Cultural sites in Acățari, Vălenii and Murgești

The Vălenii–Belvany settlement and fortification lie in Vălenii, between the Gocsipatak and Vetepatak streams. The site dates from the Neolithic period and connects a specific location with the Stone Age. This is a different historical period from that of the Roman Catholic church in Acățari, which dates from 1862 and is a local tourist attraction.

The Ferenczi Julia Memorial Park is in Murgești and is also a tourist attraction in the commune. Its commemorative character complements the archaeological site and the church with another cultural focus. Visitors interested in history and the named cultural sites can thus distinguish between a Neolithic settlement and fortification site, a 19th-century church building and a memorial park.
