Orșova lies on the banks of the Danube and the Porțile de Fier Reservoir; the Cerna is also part of the local waterway network. The town connects these waterways with an architectural history that stretches from the former Cerna Canal to 20th-century churches. If you are looking for a hotel in Orșova, you can consider whether the waterside landscape, cultural history or transport links are especially important for your stay.

Waterside Location and Sfânta Ana Monastery

Orșova is a port on the Danube. The Porțile de Fier Reservoir is another geographical feature; the Cerna is also part of the local waterway network. Sfânta Ana Monastery is located on Dealul Moșului above Orșova and offers views of part of the reservoir. Here, a specific building site and views of the water come together. The monastery was built between 1936 and 1939 as a foundation of the publicist Pamfil Șeicaru and consecrated on December 2, 1990. Its construction and consecration mark two different points in its history.

Churches and Historic Buildings

In the center of Orșova stands the Catholic church, a modernist building designed by architect Hans Fackelmann. It was built in 1966–1972. The Sfântul Nicolae church in Orșova-Sud was rebuilt in 1969–1970. Its reconstruction follows the plans of the old church, which was listed as a historic monument. The churches offer different architectural points of reference: the Catholic church is identified by its modernist design and architect, while Sfântul Nicolae is associated with the continuation of the plans of a listed predecessor church.

The Seracova Viaduct lies on the northern outskirts of the town. It was built by the Ottomans in 1739–1740 and is the last remnant of the former Cerna Canal. Another historical trace is the Drumul Eroilor. It was a 1,500-meter-long, paved access road from the center of old Orșova through the hills. Seven roadside crosses carved from solid oak, with benches for resting, lined its route. Thus, a structural remnant on the outskirts and a historic road through the hills represent different aspects of the town’s history.

Museum, Nature and Activities

The Orșova branch of the Iron Gates Region Museum has three exhibition areas: natural sciences, history and archaeology, and ethnography. The natural history exhibition presents part of the Danube Gorge with its characteristic fauna and flora. Natural history and cultural history topics are thus presented side by side within the branch. The visitor center of the Porțile de Fier Nature Park is located in Orșova’s civic center.

Water sports can be enjoyed in Orșova. The themed route “Pe urmele lui Hercules” passes through the Danube Gorge, Orșova and Eșelnița. This offers a water-based activity and a route through several named places as different options to consider.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

Orșova lies on the Bucharest–Timișoara railway line and has a bus station with connections to Moldova Nouă, Băile Herculane and Drobeta–Turnu Severin, as well as other county and interregional routes. The road connections are also specified: Orșova lies on National Road DN 65, designated European route E6; the road from Orșova to Moldova Nouă (DN 57) branches off here. When planning your journey, check which connection suits your travel date.

When choosing a hotel in Orșova, you can first consider the kind of stay you want: rail, bus and road connections help you plan your arrival; the monastery, churches and museum are associated with cultural history; and the Danube, Cerna and reservoir define the waterside setting. Consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.
