Around Dubova, the Danube gorges, trails on Ciucarul Mare and Ciucarul Mic, and cultural and historical sites shape the landscape. The Cazanele Dunării is a stretch of the Danube between Dubova and Orșova. Here, the river narrows dramatically between high, steep cliffs. To get your bearings, it is useful to distinguish between the two sections: the Cazanele Mari extends for about 4 kilometres and is dominated by the Ciucarul Mare massif; the Cazanele Mici is flanked by Ciucarul Mic.

Landscape and trails around Dubova

Ciucarul Mare, in the Porțile de Fier Nature Park, lies near Dubova. It offers panoramic views of the Cazanele Mari and the Danube. Ciucarul Mic lies on the opposite side of Dubova Bay, across from Ciucarul Mare; from there, the view looks out over the Cazanele Mici. These two distinct vantage points help visitors get a sense of the Danube gorges. In spring, you can also admire the yellow Cazane tulip on the slopes of Ciucarul Mare.

A marked hiking trail to Ciucarul Mare starts in Dubova. The uphill walk is listed as taking about 1.5 to 2 hours and is rated moderate. The trail to Ciucarul Mic, which also starts in Dubova, takes about an hour and is described as easy to moderately difficult. These estimates offer a useful basis for planning your time; for the Ciucarul Mare trail, the duration specifically refers to the uphill climb. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Peștera Ponicova is another striking natural feature of the Danube gorge: it is the largest cave in the gorge and is more than 1,660 metres long. Alongside the views, its rocky landscape and caves are a highlight for hikers and nature lovers.

Monastery, church and caves steeped in history

Mraconia Monastery lies on the left bank of the Danube, at the entrance to the Cazanele Dunării and near the Chipul lui Decebal. It was originally built in the 15th century. The monastery's re-establishment began after 1989; the cornerstone of a new church was laid in 1993. This timeline distinguishes the original construction from the later re-establishment. The Orthodox church in Dubova is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God (Nașterea Maicii Domnului).

Archaeological traces also offer glimpses into the area's long history. In Climente I Cave, in the Cazanele Mari area near Dubova, a layer contained hearths and faunal remains. A historical interpretation links nearby Peștera Veterani to the Dacian period: it is said to have been used then as a sacred site for the worship of the god Zamolxis. Peștera Veterani is accessible only by water. Boats can be rented in Dubova and Eșelnița; availability depends on the provider. Check directly with them before planning a trip.

Packages with ATVs or electric bikes are also available for exploring the Svinița and Dubova areas. You can choose suggested routes or have one tailored to you; a Danubian Adventures specialist accompanies participants throughout the experience. As the provider's arrangements may change, it is advisable to enquire before booking.

The Dubova–Eibenthal–Dubova loop is 47.8 kilometres long and rated moderate. It connects the Cazanele Dunării region with the Munții Almăjului and passes through Dubova and Eibenthal. Founded by ethnic Czechs, the village developed into a major coal-mining centre after 1840. As for the wider region, Radio România Internațional reported in 2024 that the administration of the Porțile de Fier Nature Park had set up four information points and created 15 walking trails, including one on Ciucaru Mare.
