Izvoarele: Churches, Archaeology and Nature
Accommodation in Izvoarele
The “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” Church in Izvoarele dates from 1890; west of the village lies the “La Fântână” archaeological site. Together with other churches in the localities of the commune and nature-related attractions such as the Mănafu Forest, these provide a focus on architectural history, archaeology and landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the local context of each attraction: some relate to the village of Izvoarele, while others are in localities within the commune. This can help you decide whether architecture, prehistoric history or nature should shape your stay.
Archaeology and architectural history
The Isvoarele-Fântânele settlement is classified as a Neolithic and Eneolithic settlement. The “La Fântână” archaeological site is located west of the village of Izvoarele. These two places offer different points of interest: Isvoarele-Fântânele represents a prehistoric period, while La Fântână is an archaeological site west of the village. Together with the church built in 1890, they invite comparison between prehistoric settlement history and more recent architectural history. The “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” Church is also classified as a building of local interest. A cultural-historical stay can therefore include both a specific construction date and heritage classification, as well as archaeological themes.
Churches in the commune’s localities
The construction dates of other churches also provide a chronological overview. In Valea Bujorului, the “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” Church dates from 1850. In Dimitrie Cantemir, the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church was built in 1879; the church of the same name in Petru Rareș dates from 1885 and was rebuilt in 1938. The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church was added in Chiriacu in 1902. Compared with the church in Izvoarele, built in 1890, the dates mentioned range from 1850 to 1902. In Petru Rareș, a later phase of construction is also part of the history, with the rebuilding in 1938. Those interested in churches and architecture can explore different localities and building periods, rather than focusing their trip on a single building.
Landscape and leisure
The commune of Izvoarele lies in a lowland region. West of the village of Valea Bujorului is the Mănafu Forest, designated a forest reserve in 1954 and covering 278 hectares. Its trees include downy oaks mixed with Turkey oaks, Hungarian oaks and planted acacias. The forest thus offers a landscape counterpoint to the churches and archaeological attractions. Sport fishing is also possible in the Izvoarele 1 (Chiriacu) reservoir. If this activity is relevant to your trip, check the current conditions with the provider in advance.
A dated event
The third edition of “Ziua Comunei Izvoarele” took place on September 29, 2024. The event included a market for local products, with preserves, honey, baked goods and confectionery, pastrami, cheese and nuts. This selection offers a specific impression of the products featured at the event. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current dates; the September 2024 date refers to this edition.
Consider which of these aspects matter to you during your stay, and choose your destination accordingly.
