Giurgiu combines its location on the left bank of the Danube with landmarks, memorial sites and archaeological finds. If you are looking for a hotel in Giurgiu, these different highlights can help you tailor your stay to city history, architecture or a seasonal Danube experience.

Location on the Danube and transport routes

Giurgiu lies in the Danube floodplain on the river’s left bank. Two other details are important for understanding its transport links: the city lies at the intersection of road and rail networks on Pan-European Corridors IV and IX; the Port of Giurgiu is on Corridor VII. Road and rail networks, on the one hand, and the port, on the other, are therefore assigned to different corridors.

The two-level Podul Prieteniei connects Romania and Bulgaria. Information about the structure also includes its approach viaducts: together, the bridge and viaducts comprise 37 spans over a length of 2,234 metres. Both figures refer to the entire structure, not just the bridge.

Landmarks and memorial sites

Giurgiu’s Clock Tower is 22 metres high, was built in 1734 and served as a fire watch and observation post. Schitul Sfântul Nicolae tells a different story of historical change: in 1830, it was converted from a Muslim place of worship into an Orthodox church.

The statue ensemble in Parcul Alei comprises 23 busts of heroes of the 1877 War of Independence. While the Schitul marks a change in religious use, the ensemble commemorates the War of Independence. Two places, two different ways of exploring the city’s history.

The historic Bordei in Giurgiu is the last surviving example in the city of this traditional lowland dwelling. This building type adds a perspective on the traditional lowland way of life to the city’s churches and memorial sites. Completed in 1905, Podul Bizetz was the first bridge in Europe with a horizontal curve. The two bridges therefore have different distinguishing features: the curve is the defining feature of the Bizetz, while Podul Prieteniei is notable for its cross-border connection and the dimensions of the entire structure.

Museums and regional history

The prehistoric section of the Muzeul Județean Teohari Antonescu Giurgiu includes significant Palaeolithic artefacts from the Aurignacian, discovered at the Giurgiu-Malu Roșu site. The Diocesan Museum of Giurgiu displays Christian art and provides information about the region’s religious history. Here, you can explore different cultural highlights: archaeological finds on the one hand, and Christian art and religious history on the other.

Seasonal experiences on the Danube

A city announcement dated 13 May 2026 mentions seasonal leisure cruises on the Danube aboard the passenger ship “Valahia”. Depending on the water level, the cruises depart from the fish market site or the port. Before making plans, check the cruise dates and departure point, which depends on the water level.

The Sărbătoarea Sfintei Fecioare Maria is also one of Giurgiu’s summer traditions. It has been held for more than a hundred years and takes place every summer. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the specific event dates.
