Tulucești: Forest, History and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Tulucești
For a stay in Tulucești, nature, archaeology and intangible cultural heritage can be considered as distinct interests. Pădurea Gârboavele represents the landscape and its protected areas; Valul lui Traian represents a Roman defensive system, and there is also a tradition from Tulucești. For orientation, it is worth considering the geographical relationships: the forest area, the protected section, the commune’s territory and the area around Lake Brateș are not the same thing.
Forest Area and Protected Areas
Pădurea Gârboavele covers a total of 399.7 hectares and is located within the territory of Tulucești commune. A 230-hectare protected section of the forest is a nature reserve of national interest and is also a natural monument. In addition, Pădurea Gârboavele is designated as the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0151. The figure of 4 percent refers to the share of the commune’s territory that lies within this Natura 2000 site. The figures describe different scales: the forest as a whole, its protected section and the share of the commune’s territory within the Natura 2000 site. This helps put the protected-area designation into context without equating the percentage with the forest area.
Adventure Park and Zoo in the Forest
Pădurea Gârboavele Forest has an adventure park with 15 courses of varying difficulty and two zip lines. If this offering is important to your travel plans, check the park’s current configuration before visiting, as its facilities may change.
Galați Zoo is also located in the forest, 17 kilometres northwest of the city of Galați. Its diverse collection includes mammals and birds from Europe, Asia and Africa, housed in designated areas. As part of its modernisation, the zoo’s total area was expanded from 7 to 14 hectares. This figure refers to the zoo, not the forest as a whole. The animals’ origins give the collection an international perspective; its composition may change. If certain animal groups are a key factor in your plans, check the latest information in advance.
Roman History and Horse Breeding
Valul lui Traian in Tulucești is a Roman earthwork defensive system dating from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. Tulucești Stud Farm was established in 1999 with the aim of breeding purebred horses for sport and leisure; since its establishment, it has specialised in Gidran horses. The two details point to very different periods: the Roman history of the earthwork and the start of horse breeding in 1999.
A Tradition Around Saint Elijah’s Day
The tradition of “Pomul de Sfântul Ilie” from Tulucești was entered into Romania’s National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage on 3 September 2025. A ceremony commemorating the dead is held every year on 20 July, Saint Elijah’s Day, in the communes around Lake Brateș. The two dates have different roles: 3 September 2025 is the date of registration, while 20 July is the annual day of the ceremony. If you are planning a trip specifically for this occasion, check the dates in advance.
