Galați County has a plateau-like relief. Based on elevation, location and relief features, five geomorphological units are distinguished: the Covurlui Plateau, the Tecuci Plain, the Covurlui Plain, the Lower Siret Floodplain and the Lower Prut Floodplain. This diversity shapes the landscape for a trip to Galați.

Landscapes between the Danube and the Prut

The wild peony found in Pădurea Băneasa forest, between Băneasa and Roșcani, is also protected. Another natural destination is Lake Zătun: it lies in the Bădălan embanked area on the Danube and is part of the Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park. Protected natural areas and river landscapes come together across the county.

To reach Lake Zătun, take the E87 Galați–Giurgiulești. After crossing the irrigation canal, the paved DJ 251E continues along the Danube flood embankment. As access may be temporarily affected, check conditions before setting out.

Museums and historic sites

The “Casa Cuza Vodă” Museum in Galați is housed in the former residence of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Its collections include memorabilia, decorative and fine art, old books and a numismatic collection. As of August 2026, the museum was temporarily closed for restoration work. Check its current visiting status before you go.

The Museum of History, Culture and Christian Spirituality of the Lower Danube in Galați offers a different perspective. Its permanent exhibition includes old icons and books, religious objects, paintings and photographs. The “Hortensia Papadat Bengescu” Memorial House, located in the writer’s birthplace, houses the exhibition “Personalități iveștene.” It displays documentary materials and objects associated with Hortensia Papadat Bengescu and other notable figures from Ivești.

Archaeological finds are the focus of the “Paul Păltănea” History Museum in Galați, where artifacts from the Dacian fortress of Piroboridava in Poiana and from the Roman settlement and fort of Tirighina Bărboși are displayed. In Tecuci, the “Teodor Cincu” History Museum preserves more than 58,250 cultural objects in fields including archaeology, numismatics, art, history, ethnography and technology. These include an EGO 4/14 automobile made in 1924, described as unique in Romania.

Several sites also reveal the region’s architectural history. The “Costache Negri” Memorial House is housed in a manor built for the Costache Negri family in the early 19th century, in the style of an evolved Moldavian farmhouse. Buciumeni Monastery includes an old church built in 1840 and an altar dating from 1700; the complex was declared a historic monument in 1974. Vladimirești Monastery comprises the Izvorul Tămăduirii Chapel, built in 1939, and the Adormirea Maicii Domnului Church, built in 1941.

Activities and regional traditions

Bob & Bike Adrenalina Gârboavele brings together several facilities: two bobsled tracks with a combined length of more than 1.5 kilometers and two cycling routes. The family route is 2.6 kilometers long, and the competition route is 4.3 kilometers. There is also a ten-meter-high climbing tower, playgrounds, pavilions and a large amphitheater for outdoor events. Check the facilities’ current conditions before visiting.

The recreation area in Pădurea Gârboavele forest offers nature walks, picnic and barbecue areas, mountain biking and motocross trails, and an adventure park. The “Vatra cu Dor” Open-Air Museum offers another way to experience regional traditions, with workshops in pottery, carpentry, weaving and reed-mat making. The museum also organizes traditional dance and mask-making classes, as well as summer camps for children.

The cultural calendar includes the “Doina Covurluiului” Folklore Festival, an annual event organized by the “Dunărea de Jos” Cultural Center. Dates and programs may vary from year to year.
