Vârtop brings together local history and several specific cultural themes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering its different facets: Biserica Sf. Nicolae tells the story of the village’s building history, while archaeological finds and the commune’s location broaden the picture. The Vârtop Treasure is another part of this history; its earlier presentation in Craiova was part of a separate exhibition.

Biserica Sf. Nicolae and its building history

Biserica Sf. Nicolae in Vârtop was built before 1800 on the site of an earlier wooden church that had burned down. It has two dedications: Saint Nicholas the Hierarch and Saints Constantine and Helena. Both the story of the church’s construction and its dedications form part of the village’s historical identity.

Later alterations are also associated with specific years. In 1881, the church roof was repaired, and the shingles were replaced with tiles. In 1894, both the interior and exterior appearance of the church were changed. These two events involved different aspects: first the roof and its material, then the interior and exterior. The building’s history can thus be viewed as a sequence of specific interventions, rather than being defined only by its construction date.

Archaeological traces in the commune

The archaeological sites extend beyond the village to the commune of Vârtop. It contains a settlement and several burial mounds dating from the Hallstatt period, approximately 1200 to 450/300 BC. Finds from the settlement and burial mounds include large, highly polished storage vessels. The approximate date range and variety of finds give the area’s prehistory a more tangible outline.

The commune’s archaeology also includes a silver hoard of Dacian coins and fibulae. Another find associated with Vârtop is a digitated fibula with a foot featuring a prosomorphic button, dating from the 7th century AD. Together with the Hallstatt finds, these discoveries offer different chronological and thematic ways to explore the history of the village and its commune.

The Vârtop Treasure and getting your bearings

The Vârtop Treasure was presented at the Muzeul Olteniei in Craiova as part of the project “Aurul şi Argintul Antic al României”. It comprises 45 coins and numerous other jewellery objects. If you plan to visit the museum in Craiova to see the treasure, check in advance whether it is currently on display; the presentation was part of an earlier exhibition.

The village of Vârtop was established in 1700. The commune of Vârtop lies on county road DJ-552, 43 km from Craiova. Geographically, it is located in the contact zone between the Câmpia Desnățuiului and the Piemontul Bălăciței, by the Baboia River. These details provide a geographical context for the commune, while the church and its building phases offer a tangible way to explore local history.

The commune’s day is associated with the third week of May. If this occasion matters to your travel plans, check the local programme. This lets you consider the historical themes, the commune’s geography and a possible event date separately, without combining them into a single visitor offer.
