Dolj brings together cultural and historical sites with nature-focused destinations. In Craiova, the museum, park, botanical garden and zoo offer a range of experiences; along the lower reaches of the Jiu and at Lacul Bistreț, you can discover protected areas and migratory birds. If you are looking for a hotel in Dolj, start by considering whether architecture, museums, green spaces or wildlife watching will shape your trip.

Cultural history and architecture

Muzeul Olteniei Craiova was founded on 1 April 1915. It currently operates four buildings, with departments for history and archaeology, natural sciences, and ethnography, as well as a restoration and conservation laboratory. This brings historical, natural history and ethnographic subjects together in one institution.

Parcul Nicolae Romanescu covers approximately 90 hectares and is described as Romania’s largest urban green space. The park’s design received a gold medal at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. The area and award represent different aspects of the site: its size and the historical recognition of its design.

Palatul Marincu in Calafat was built between 1905 and 1907 by Ștefan Marincu in memory of his daughter, Marioara. Paul Gottereau designed the plans, and Constantin Rogalski supervised the construction work. Its architecture combines French neoclassicism with Baroque and Rococo accents, as well as influences from early 20th-century Romanian architecture.

Cula Cernăteștilor was converted into a museum in 1972 and houses records of the local past. The museum adds its own perspective on the region’s history to the story of its architecture.

Natural areas and wildlife

The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0045 “Coridorul Jiului” extends along the lower reaches of the Jiu and was designated in 2007 by an order of the Minister of the Environment. An educational thematic nature trail has been established in the Pădurea Zăval nature reserve. Check the trail’s condition before visiting.

Lacul Bistreț covers 1,936 hectares and is considered a reference area for the protection of migratory birds. It serves as a refuge for migratory birds along the Danube. The lake was designated a Special Protection Area for birds in 2007 and a Ramsar site in 2012. These details show both the scale of the area and the history of its protected status.

The Botanical Garden in Craiova covers 17 hectares. It includes a museum with seed and fruit specimens, display panels, graphics, diplomas and catalog collections. Craiova Zoo opened in 1906 and is considered one of Romania’s oldest zoos. It is home to 39 species and a total of 244 birds and animals; such population figures can change.

Opening hours and trip planning

Cula Izvoranu-Geblescu probably dates from the second half of the 18th century. Its opening hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00; it is closed on Mondays. Check the hours before your visit.

Casa Memorială Amza Pellea in Băilești opened to the public on 7 April 2024. The exhibition commemorates actor Amza Pellea and includes objects donated by his daughter, actress Oana Pellea. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.
