Târgu Secuiesc: Old Town, Crafts and Churches
Accommodation in Târgu Secuiesc
For planning a trip to Târgu Secuiesc, the historic town center is a good starting point. The market square, narrow courtyards, craft collections and churches each offer a different perspective. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the aspect that interests you most: the town’s layout, local history or architecture.
The Old Town between the market square and courtyards
The historic center is an oval former market square. Radiating out from it are 73 so-called “udvarterek,” or dead-end lanes. Târgu Secuiesc’s inner courtyards are narrow lanes, 2 to 4 meters wide and 25 to 180 meters long. This brings together a clearly defined square and many narrow paths of varying lengths. If you want to explore the town’s layout, you can consider the oval square and the courtyards as two scales of its historic urban landscape.
Crafts and local history
Traditional crafts are the focus of the Guild Museum. The exhibition features tools, products and workshop equipment used by potters, shoemakers, tanners, furriers, blacksmiths, locksmiths, hatmakers, tailors and carpenters. A separate room is devoted to documents from the 1848–1849 Revolution. The collection also includes nearly 200 dolls. Most wear Hungarian folk costumes; they represent almost all regions of Transylvania and span approximately a century. Workshop objects, historical documents and folk costumes thus offer different themes to explore during a museum visit.
The Turóczi-Mózes Memorial House is also associated with a specific episode in the town’s history: between January and June 1849, 64 of Gábor Áron’s 70 cannons were cast here. This timeline distinguishes the episode from the documents on the Revolution at the Guild Museum: both relate to 1849, but each has a different focus.
Pharmacy Museum and churches
The Pharmacy Museum is on the upper floor of the so-called Finta House, Courtyard 12, No. 1. Check the location details before your trip. Its collection includes furnishings from pharmacies 24 and 52 in Târgu Secuiesc dating from after 1949, and was supplemented by the collection of Dr. Boga Olivér. Alongside its location, the museum highlights local pharmacy collections.
The Reformed Calvinist Church was built between 1770 and 1782 in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles, on the foundations of a wooden chapel dating from the early 17th century. Its present-day organ dates from 1861 and was made by organ builder Kolonics István. The Catholic Baroque church has a different construction history: work began in 1701, and it was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity in 1796. Together, the two churches reflect different building periods and historical connections.
Vigadó, market and cycling route
The Vigadó Cultural Center was built between 1902 and 1904 on the northwest side of the historic center. It has a theater hall with 400 seats and a conference hall with 150 seats. The theater hall has more than twice as many seats as the conference hall.
A market for traditional Szekler products is held on the second Saturday of every month, offering a chance to explore regional goods. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific date before your trip. An MTB route connects Târgu Secuiesc with Lake Saint Anne. If you plan to ride it, check the current route conditions locally.
