Dobârlău Commune: Mountain Scenery, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Dobârlău Commune
Mountain scenery and local history offer different starting points for planning a trip to Dobârlău Commune. The commune lies at the junction of the Țara Bârsei and Munții Întorsurii geographical microregions. Dobârlău itself is in the southeastern part of Țara Bârsei and is surrounded by the Clăbucetele Întorsurii. Valea Dobârlăului lies at the northern foot of the Munții Întorsurii Buzăului, in the upper valley of the Dobârlău stream.
Landscape and Natural Environment
Forests and pastures are the predominant vegetation types in the commune. The region’s typical mountain forest fauna includes red deer, bears, lynxes, foxes, wolves, wild boar and falcons. The landscape can therefore be described both through its defining land cover and through the animal species associated with the region’s natural environment.
The water network also provides a specific geographical reference point: Pârâul Finișoara is a tributary of the Râul Tărlung. Another trace of local history can be found at the archaeological site “Cetatea lui Barabas”: an earthwork stands beside a stream.
Hiking Trail to Vârful Pilişca
The hiking trail marked PA connects Dobârlău with Vârful Pilişca, the highest point in the Munții Întorsurii. The summit’s elevation is given as 1,222 metres; slight variations are possible depending on the map source. The trail offers views of Valea Dobârlăului and the ridge between Dobârlău and Teliu. The route therefore features a named summit destination and two distinct landscape views. If you plan to hike the trail, check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
History and Local Traditions
Mărcuș has been documented since 1505. Mărcuș Monastery is dedicated to “Sfinții Români” and “Acoperământul Maicii Domnului”. According to one interpretation of the name’s origin, Dobârlău derives from the shepherd Dobre, who is said to have settled there around 1500 as one of the first inhabitants.
In 2010, folk traditions in Valea Dobârlăului included Christmas carols and New Year celebrations. Pastoral practices are also part of local history: in Mărcuș and Lunca Mărcușului, sheep were gathered around the Easter holidays and tended until December 1 or the first snowfall.
Historical pastoral practice in Mărcuș included six kilograms of Brânză de burduf and one kilogram of Urdă for each ewe that was milked. The quantities and seasonal sheep-keeping offer different insights into life at the time: on the one hand, the rhythm of herding and, on the other, regional cheese products. Together with the place names and the monastery, these details provide several distinct ways to explore the commune’s history.
