Comandău can be explored through three themes: industrial history, places of remembrance, and a landscape shaped by forests and mountains. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can consider whether your trip will focus on technical history, local history, or nature and winter sports. The distinctive buildings, monuments and landscape features offer different points of connection.

Forest Railway and Planul Înclinat

The narrow-gauge Covasna–Comandău Forest Railway was connected to Covasna railway station in 1892. Its gauge was 760 millimeters; in the past, it transported wood from the Comandău area to Covasna. The gauge provides a technical measurement, while the timber transport describes the railway’s former purpose. Today, the surviving sections between Comandău and Valea Zânelor are used for tourism.

The Planul Înclinat is also part of the technical heritage. The installation was inaugurated in 1890 as a fully ecological, gravity-powered system. It is 1,236 meters long and has a vertical drop of 327 meters. The two measurements describe different aspects: the length of the installation and the vertical difference. Together, they convey its technical scale without requiring an estimated walking time.

Remains of a funicular railway are also visible on Mount Sisak and are regarded as evidence of the area’s industrial history. The industrial theme is thus reflected in various technical installations and their remains: the former forest railway, the Planul Înclinat, and the funicular railway.

Micul Castel and Places of Remembrance

Micul Castel is a historic monument, built in 1890 as a residence for the director of the center. Since December 2006, it has housed the Comandău village museum, with exhibitions on local history and natural sciences. The dates mark two different stages in the building’s history: its construction and the beginning of its role as a museum.

A plaque on the wall of the former office commemorates the workers’ strike in Comandău in 1936. The central park also contains two monuments: one to the heroes of the 1848–1849 Revolution and one to those who fell in the First World War. Their dedications thus extend back to the revolutionary years of the 19th century. The three memorials commemorate different historical events.

Forest Landscape, River and Peat Bogs

Comandău lies on the Bâsca Mare stream, a tributary of the Buzău. The Nagy-Baszka Valley is surrounded by mountains and described as picturesque; the region is characterized by deciduous and fir forests. Peat bogs are also among the local natural features: they are considered a rarity of nature.

A ski slope on Mount Laur near Comandău adds winter sports to the historical themes. If you are traveling for this, check in advance whether the slope will be open on your dates. One specific route leads from Comandău to Vârful Lăcăuți. Its first section runs for 1.9 kilometers along the forest railway, after which the route crosses the bed of the Bâsca Mare River. The 1.9 kilometers refer to this first section, not to the total length of the route.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

A well-maintained forest road leads to Comandău through Valea Zânelor. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out. This helps distinguish the journey from planning a route or exploring the area’s technical and historical themes.
