Ștefănești offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: nature watching at the Stânca-Costești Reservoir, archaeological remains at La Stârcea, and the Ștefan Luchian Museum and Cuv. Parascheva Church. These themes are spread across different locations and areas. When planning, consider whether landscape, archaeology or culture will shape your stay the most.

Reservoir and nature reserves

The Stânca-Costești Reservoir lies on the Prut River, on the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The reservoir area can be reached via the paved DN 24C Iași–Ștefănești and DN 29D Botoșani–Ștefănești roads. These road connections refer to the reservoir area.

At the lake, in the Natura 2000 site ROSPA0058 Lacul Stânca-Costești, birdwatching takes centre stage: ornithologists visit because of the diversity of bird species found there. The protected area extends partly across the territory of Ștefănești and partly across the territories of Manoleasa and Ripiceni. Those interested in nature watching will find a different focus here than at the archaeological and cultural sites.

Another natural feature is the Stânca Ștefănești geological and floristic nature reserve. It is the only place in Romania where Schivereckia podolica grows. Here, a particular plant species is the focus, while at the lake the natural interest centres on birdlife. Local access conditions may vary, so check them before visiting.

The 2016 management plan lists tourism, recreational, educational and scientific activities as permitted in the ROSPA0058 area, provided visitors follow the rules. Check the rules currently in force before visiting.

Archaeology, church and museum

The Ștefănești – La Stârcea archaeological site lies outside the built-up area, on the southeastern edge of the town. It is located on a terrace on the right bank of the Bașeu, opposite the Podul Bașeului point, in the direction of the Prut. Recorded as an open settlement and a flat necropolis, the site has two distinct archaeological classifications. It is associated with the La Tène period, the Migration Period and the Eneolithic. Its chronology is therefore not defined by just one period.

Cuv. Parascheva Church in Ștefănești is described as the oldest religious monument in Moldavia adapted for defensive purposes. Its distinctive feature is the combination of a religious monument and defensive adaptation. This sets the church apart from La Stârcea, where the settlement, necropolis and several periods determine its classification.

Art history also has a specific connection with Ștefănești: it is home to the only museum in Romania dedicated to the painter Ștefan Luchian. The museum displays cultural artifacts from the painter’s family collection. These form the exhibition space “Camera – atelier a lui Ștefan Luchian”. Thus, the museum’s dedication and the family’s cultural artifacts come together in the explicitly named studio space.

Planning priorities for your trip

The themes can be distinguished according to your interests: the lake is about birdwatching, La Stârcea about archaeological classifications, and the Luchian Museum about art and his family’s cultural artifacts. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these interests will shape your stay.
