Telciu can be viewed from several perspectives: the Orthodox church and the Telcișor-Buscatu monastery complex represent different architectural styles and periods, while traditional customs add a cultural dimension. The Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave is also near the village, and a challenging hiking trail leads from Telciu village to the ridge of the Rodna Mountains. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the cultural and scenic highlights separate: they differ considerably in subject and the time they require.

Churches and Architectural History

The Orthodox church in Telciu is built of masonry and dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Hierarch. It was constructed between 1900 and 1913. The church’s interior and the iconostasis were painted in the Oriental style in 1921. An iconostasis is a wall decorated with icons that separates the altar from the main body of the church. The time between the construction phase and the interior decoration places the latter as a later stage in the church’s history.

The Telcișor-Buscatu monastery complex includes a wooden church, four hermit cells and a summer altar. The wooden church was built between 1995 and 1997 in the Maramureș style. Its construction period and material differ considerably from those of Telciu’s masonry Orthodox church. Thus, two distinct architectural themes stand side by side: masonry and Oriental-style interior painting on the one hand, and timber construction in the Maramureș style on the other.

Traditional Customs and Festive Foods

Christmas caroling is one of the customs in Telciu. People sing at windows or at the entrance door of the porch before entering the house. The custom ties the singing to the moment immediately before entering the home, giving it a clearly domestic setting.

Traditional festive foods include sarmale, cozonac, pork sausages, Călbaș (Cartaboș), Toba and ribs cooked in sauerkraut brine. Red eggs, lamb dishes, Pasca and Turtițe are also part of the festive fare. The dishes range from meat dishes and eggs to pastries, adding a culinary perspective to the architecture and customs.

Cave and Hiking Trail in the Rodna Mountains

Izvorul Tăușoarelor Cave in the Rodna Mountains is a tourist attraction near Telciu and is part of Rodna Mountains National Park. As a nature destination, it differs from the hiking trail, which is a specific, time-intensive activity.

The challenging trail marked PR connects Telciu village with the ridge of the Rodna Mountains near Șaua Bătrânei. It has an elevation gain of more than 1,600 metres and takes about 10 to 11 hours. Its difficulty, elevation gain and duration make it a long hike that should be set aside as a separate block of time when planning your day. Trail markings and conditions may change, so check current route information before setting out.
