Bistrita-Nasaud between mountain nature and culture

Between the Rodna Mountains, seasonal blooms and museums, Bistrița-Năsăud offers a range of reasons to visit. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether mountain scenery, hiking trails or cultural sites will be your main focus. The region’s attractions range from a protected glacial lake to historical exhibitions.

The Rodna Mountains and protected nature

The Rodna Mountains National Park extends across the northeastern part of Bistrița-Năsăud County, covering the communes of Maieru, Parva, Rebrișoara, Rodna, Romuli, Șanț and Telciu, as well as the town of Sângeorz-Băi. Under UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere” Programme, it is internationally designated as a biosphere reserve.

Lacul Lala Mic, a glacial lake at an elevation of approximately 1,810 metres, lies within the national park. It is in a strictly protected area of the park. The elevation gives an indication of the lake’s alpine setting; its protected status also makes it a distinctive natural attraction in the region.

The Arcalia dendrological park in the commune of Şieu-Măgheruş offers a different kind of plant life, with rare tree and shrub species. The region’s natural attractions thus include both mountain scenery and a dendrological park, each offering a different focus.

Daffodil blooms and trails

At Muntele Saca, protected wild daffodils of the species Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorusbloom each year in May and June in the Poiana cu narcise protected area. This makes the bloom a clearly seasonal reason to visit. The area can be reached by mountain trails from Șanț or Valea Blaznei; check conditions locally, as they vary by season.

A specialist guide is recommended exclusively for access to Peștera Cobășel. This recommendation applies to visits to the cave and should be taken into account when planning.

The Ținutul de Sus section of the Via Transilvanica starts in Lunca Ilvei, in Bistrița-Năsăud County, and is 210 kilometres long. A GPX download is available for route planning; check trail conditions and services before setting out.

Piatra Fântânele has ski slopes and a chairlift for winter sports. Check operating status before your trip. The annual calendar offers different highlights: daffodils bloom in May and June, while Piatra Fântânele is associated with winter sports.

Castles, museums and a health resort

Castel Teleki Posmuș is a national monument dating from the 18th century and was built after 1746. Exhibitions are held in the castle. It opened to the general public in September 2022; check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The History and Archaeology Department of the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex displays significant artefacts in six halls. They illustrate the development of human communities in the Someșul Mare Basin, from the beginnings of human settlement to the modern era. The Liviu Rebreanu Memorial Museum offers a literary focus, with a permanent book exhibition dedicated to the author’s complete works. These include numerous translations into more than twenty foreign languages.

Sângeorz-Băi is considered a renowned health resort; its mineral springs are believed to have healing properties. This adds a wellness focus to the area’s nature and culture attractions.
