Moșoaia Commune: Archaeology and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Moșoaia Commune
Archaeological sites, churches and a war memorial give Moșoaia Commune a distinctive cultural and historical character. Its traces range from the Bronze Age to a Geto-Dacian settlement and a necropolis dating from the Hallstatt and La Tène periods. Church paintings, votive frescoes and monument listings add to this historical focus. Your stay can therefore explore several themes: early settlement history, burial monuments, church art and local commemoration.
Archaeological Sites
Bronze Age finds from the Tei culture were discovered at the Aşezarea de la Smeura - La Rogoaze settlement: pottery fragments, fragments of fired clay, a stone knife and a flint point. The site dates to 1700–1400 BC. Remains of a Geto-Dacian settlement dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD were also found there, including pottery fragments and an iron knife. These two dating periods point to markedly different historical eras; the groups of finds can also be distinguished by their different materials and objects.
Another archaeological site is the Necropola de la Moşoaia - Pădurea Moşoii necropolis, at the entrance to Moşoaia. It dates from the late Hallstatt period to the early La Tène period and consists of five tumuli. The largest is about 25 metres in diameter and 3 metres high; at the same time, the necropolis has been significantly disturbed by modern interventions. Unlike the settlement, with its pottery and tool finds, the number and dimensions of the tumuli define the character of this site.
Churches and Memorials
The churches can also be distinguished by their names, locations and works of art. Biserica Cuvioasa Paraschiva in Moșoaia has monument number AG-II-m-B-13746. It lies in the valley of the Teleorman River, halfway between the village of Moşoaia and the village of Lăzăreşti. In Ciocănăi, Biserica Sfântul Nicolae has monument number AG-II-m-A-13595; in Smeura is the church Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului.
In Hințești, the paintings and surviving votive frescoes are of particular interest. Frescoes depicting the donors and their families have been preserved in the church. The original oil paintings were executed by Gheorghe Stoenescu; an inscription identifies him as a student of the renowned Romanian painter Gh. Tătărăscu. The churches thus offer different points of interest: monument numbers and locations on the one hand, and paintings and donor portraits on the other.
The Moșoaia war memorial adds another point of interest. The names of local heroes from the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on white marble plaques. Here, the focus is on people remembered by name and on two specific wartime periods—a different way of exploring history from the prehistoric settlement traces and tumuli.
