Băiculeşti can be understood through two specific themes for travel planning: the construction history of the Tutana Monastery Complex and the landscape along the Argeș River, with Zigoneni Reservoir. The churches and the municipality’s varied terrain offer different points of interest if you are planning a stay focused on culture or nature.

Construction history of the Tutana Monastery Complex

The former Mănăstirea Tutana is now a parish church. The “Sf. Atanasie” Church was built before 1497 and rebuilt between 1582 and 1588. The bell tower ruins also date from 1582 to 1588. The ruins of the monks’ cells date from the 15th to the 18th century, and the enclosure wall from the 16th century. The complex also includes the princely residence of Mihnea Turcitul.

The church has a trefoil plan; its façades feature exposed brick and two tiers of arcades. The “Sf. Atanasie” Church of the former Mănăstirea Tutana is considered the only Romanian church dedicated to this saint. The historical details thus show several construction phases—from the early church building and its reconstruction to the surviving parts of the complex, including those described as ruins.

Another church in Băiculeşti

The Orthodox Church of “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” is also part of the area’s history. It is an active place of worship for the local community. The communities of Băiculeşti and Bunești were its principal benefactors. The interior murals date from 1951 and were painted by Emil Ivănescu-Millan. Băiculeşti is therefore home to distinct histories of church architecture and art: the long construction history of the Tutana complex and the dated murals in this church.

The Argeș River, reservoir, and hills

The banks of the Argeș River shape the municipality of Băiculeşti; the river forms Zigoneni Reservoir there. The reservoir covers 65 hectares and lies between Băiculeşti and Zigoneni, on the northern boundary of the municipality. Numerous hills are cut through by a dense network of deep valleys. The water and the hilly terrain are two distinct geographical features of the area.

Getting there and planning your route

Mănăstirea Tutana is 7 km from the DN 7C on the section between Pitești and Curtea de Argeș, and can be reached from Argeșani via the DJ 704F. As road conditions may change, check your route before travelling. Băiculeşti railway station is a historic monument dating from 1880. A 2023 description states that the Pitești–Curtea de Argeș railway line runs through the municipality and is served by Băiculeşti station. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable.

An older route description lists an MTB-XC route from Băiculeşti through Tutana, Bascovele, Ursoaia, Cotmeana, and Băbana to Pitești. Most of it follows unpaved farm tracks and lightly trafficked county and municipal roads. The ride requires good physical preparation and confident bike handling on uneven paths; take care on busier sections. Check the route and conditions before setting out.
