Hvasser offers several ways to plan your trip: coastal paths and beaches, a long sailing tradition, and traces of local history. If you are interested in a particular route, the coast or maritime topics, the specific places and route descriptions can help you find your way. The neighboring places of Brøtsø and Tjøme are also part of the area: Hvasser is connected to both by bridges.

Church, Museum and Sailing Tradition

Hvasser Church is a wooden long church with tall Gothic-style windows. Its foundation stone was laid on May 6, 1902, and it was consecrated on June 26, 1903. Parking at the church is limited, and alternative parking is located a little farther away. If you are traveling by car, it is worth bearing this difference in mind when planning your visit.

The Hvasser Coastal Museum is located in Loshuset in Sandøsund. Its permanent exhibition includes the history of the Hvasser pilot station. Another maritime connection is Færder Sailing Association: the association maintains the tradition of the Meginjollen and Færdersnekkene boats and is based at the pier in Sandøsund, by Solsiden on Fynveien in Hvasser. The classic regatta course for the Færdersnekkene is called “Røssesundløpet.” It goes around Hvasser and Brøtsø and starts in Sandøsund.

Hiking Trails and Their Terrain

For a longer circular hike, take the 11.2-kilometer coastal trail “Hvasser rundt.” “Hvasser nord” is also a circular route, but is considerably shorter at about 3.6 kilometers. You can start either in Sandøsund or at the parking lot by Lilleskagen. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in the sections described.

Between Sandøsund and Lilleskagen, “Hvasser nord” partly follows a narrow, rocky and uneven path. West of Lilleskagen, the route mostly runs along a wide footpath or gravel path, and partly on asphalt. Conditions can change depending on what you encounter on site. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider the different trail sections, not just the distance.

Beaches and Harbor Areas

Lilleskagen combines a sandy beach with rocky coastline. There are restrooms and ample parking; it is about a five-minute walk from the parking lot. The area is considered child-friendly, though facilities may vary seasonally. Fynsletta has a partly sandy beach, a large grassy area and shallow water. The beach is also described as family-friendly, and restrooms and ample parking are available. Seasonal conditions at the beach may vary.

Another coastal setting can be found on the inner side of the harbor: Kruke, also called Sandøsund, has a sandy beach with natural sand. Krukehavn guest harbor offers berths for 25 boats; some can accommodate boats up to 40 feet long. Alongside the beaches, this gives you specific maritime places and figures to keep in mind.

Cycling Route and Færder National Park

One cycling experience takes you from Tønsberg via Tjøme and Hvasser. The route links coastal scenery, villages, swimming spots and special nature experiences. The cycling route through Hvasser offers easy access to Færder National Park. In the area around Hvasser, the islands to the south, Verdens Ende and Moutmarka are part of the national park.

Popular activities in Færder National Park around Hvasser include boating, kayaking, hiking and swimming. These add opportunities on the water and along the coast to the paths and beach areas. When choosing activities for your trip, you can distinguish between a circular hike on Hvasser, a cycling route through the region and activities in the surrounding national park area.
