Holmestrand Between Coastal Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Holmestrand
Holmestrand combines coastal trails and swimming areas with the municipality’s cultural history. This gives you different options when planning your visit: a walking or cycling tour, time by the water, or insights into the region’s history.
The Kyststien between Holmestrand and Sande
The Kyststien between Holmestrand and Sande is approximately 13 kilometres long. People of all ages can use it for short or long walks or bike rides. This means the route can be adapted to different trip lengths, without committing to just one way of getting around.
About 7 kilometres of the Kyststien follow a disused railway line. Forest, shorelines and rocky coastal terrain characterize other sections. At Smørstein, the disused railway tunnel on the Kyststien is illuminated and is an attraction in its own right. The trail thus combines scenic landscapes with a striking remnant of the railway.
Beach and Water Activities
Dulpen has a sandy beach, a bathing jetty, two purpose-built beach volleyball courts and toilets. As facilities may change, check the current conditions at the swimming area before your visit.
The “Tvillingbru” paddling hut near Holmestrand is the rest stop closest to the town centre. It can be used free of charge without a reservation; availability may vary when you arrive. This gives you another specific place to stop for a break, in addition to the beach.
Eidsfoss lies between the lakes Bergsvannet and Eikeren. Visitors can rent canoes and SUP boards there to explore Eikeren or Bergsvannet and the surrounding area. Booking arrangements may change; check them before making plans.
Eidsfoss and the Municipality’s Cultural History
The Kulturstien in Eidsfoss passes through natural landscapes and historic building complexes. It therefore brings together nature and culture along one route, while the Kyststien takes in coastal scenery and a disused railway line.
Eidsfos HovedgĂĄrd was built around 1750 as the residence of the owner of the Eidsfoss works and was listed for protection in 1923. The Jernverksmuseet in Eidsfoss displays iron furnace works from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as examples of solid cast-iron craftsmanship. Botne kirke is a medieval stone church dating from the 13th century and located in the municipality of Holmestrand. The historical connections thus range from medieval church architecture to iron furnace works from later centuries.
Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Several trains run through Holmestrand every day, connecting the town with the rest of Vestfold, Drammen and Oslo. The E18 highway between Oslo and Kristiansand runs just outside Holmestrand. When searching for a hotel in Holmestrand, you can first consider whether coastal trails and swimming areas or cultural history and lake scenery will shape your stay. The train connections and the location of the E18 provide another point of reference for planning your journey.
