When looking for a hotel in Øyestranda, the area’s history may be one factor in your choice. Øyesletta is home to a burial ground with a long history of use; the preserved Øye Mill stands by Øyebekken, and above Klevemoen is a rifle position listed as a war memorial in the cultural heritage plan. These places highlight different aspects of cultural history and help you put the destination’s themes into context.

The burial ground at Øyesletta

The burial ground at Øyesletta was in use 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. The finds suggest that those buried there belonged to the upper social strata. This social classification remains an archaeological interpretation and adds another perspective to the burial ground’s dating.

Its more recent historical significance is also noteworthy: Until 150 years ago, Øyesletta, on the Øye and Slimestad farms, was home to the largest burial ground in Kvinesdal and one of the largest in Sørlandet. A place with a long history of use thus also had later regional significance.

Mill, war memorial, and other local points of interest

The Øye Mill is one of many mills in the area and has been preserved in a beautiful cultural setting by Øyebekken. Unlike the burial ground, the focus here is on a mill and its local surroundings. The outer rifle position at Øye lies in the mountains above Klevemoen and is listed as a war memorial in Kvinesdal’s cultural heritage plan.

Another named point of interest is a log flume near Ytre Øie. It is located at the start of Øyekleiva, heading towards Vådestien. These local points of interest encompass archaeological, cultural, and military history, although they do not all describe the same kind of place.

Water and nature

Waterways are also part of the picture at Øyesletta. There are anadromous streams there; Øyebekken and Slimestadbekken are mentioned in connection with the project. The term “anadromous” refers to fish that migrate from the sea into freshwater to spawn. This adds a nature-based perspective to the cultural history themes.

Getting around Øye

The road connection is also relevant for getting around: Provincial Road 465 between Farsund and Knaben runs through Øye. It provides a specific reference point for planning your trip, without specifying a particular walking or driving time.
