Rasvåg brings together a coastal museum, trails along the coast and a guest harbor. The history of Hidra, the landscape and the local amenities offer various points of interest to help you plan your trip.

Fedrenes Minne and the History of Hidra

The Fedrenes Minne coastal museum is housed in Rasvåg’s old schoolhouse. Through objects and texts, it tells the story of Hidra from the Stone Age to the present day. The exhibits include Norway’s oldest pair of leather trousers, dating back about 650 years. Also on display is a replica of the Hidrahakken found in Kirkehamn; it is dated to 7725–7535 BC.

Rasvåg is mentioned together with Kirkehamn as far back as the age of the sagas, particularly in connection with the civil war between the Baglers and the Birkebeiners. The long history of the village and the island is therefore also a topic beyond the museum exhibitions. Fedrenes Minne has set opening hours during the summer months; outside this period, the museum opens by appointment. Check the current hours before your trip.

Coastal Landscape and Trails

Rasvåg lies sheltered behind larger and smaller islands east of Sigden and is surrounded by high hills. Bodies of water, sheltered coves and straits shape the cultural landscape on the mainland and on the small offshore islands. The area’s maritime past is also part of this picture: Rasvåg’s outer harbor had its own repair shipyard at Verven, near Gunnarsholmen.

One specific route is the “Hidra FK-Tur_Kalven og Vardefjell” hike. It starts at the car park above Fedrenes Minne and follows the shore south and east to Kalven. Along the way, it passes through an attractive coastal cultural landscape in southwestern Norway. Several hiking options are also accessible on foot from the Veisevågen guest harbor. The routes described differ in their courses and destinations; the starting point, direction and endpoint are specified for the hike to Kalven.
