Get to know Salangen through its coastal culture, historical collections and outdoor activities. A clear geographic reference point is Sjøvegan, at the innermost end of the Sagfjord. The Lundbrygga is located in the centre of the village, as is the Sjøvegan sjøfront; hiking, cycling, paddling and sea eagle safaris are also offered in Salangen. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: exhibitions and local history, time by the water, exploring the terrain or visiting during the Millionfisken fishing competition.

Museums and Coastal Culture

Lundbrygga is a museum in the centre of Sjøvegan. The “Fjord = Ferd” exhibition explores the coastal culture of the Astafjord. Lundbrygga also has a café, a museum shop and a tourist information office.

Salangen bygdetun consists of seven buildings relocated from their original sites and has a collection of around 1,500 objects. The bygdetun includes Limostua, a farmhouse dating from 1870, with an indoor exhibition in every room. While Lundbrygga focuses on coastal culture, the bygdetun brings together relocated buildings, collection items and indoor exhibitions. This lets you choose between two distinct themes when planning your cultural visits.

Sjøvegan and the Waterfront

The Sjøvegan sjøfront was officially opened in July 2024. At its viewpoint, you can enjoy the views and spend time together in any weather. The renovated centre includes a breakwater with the “Nisa” shelter and a square with a service building for residents and visiting guests. A promenade leads from the centre to Elvelund.

The waterfront development therefore includes several elements: a viewpoint, breakwater, square and promenade. This gives you different ways to explore Sjøvegan without limiting your visit to a single attraction.

Hiking, Cycling and Outdoor Activities

Salangen has 70–90 km of marked hiking trails, with markings following the Norwegian trail-marking handbook. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Other activities on offer include hikes in the Sagelva caves and cycling on marked off-road routes. Paddling on the river and sea eagle safaris are also available. The options range from walking trails and off-road cycling routes to activities on the water and sea eagle watching.

The Salangselva is a river system with anadromous fish species. You need a fishing licence to fish in the Salangselva; also check the fishing regulations in force before your trip. Elvenes Arena is open for outdoor recreation. Public access is intended to be made available to Elvenes Beach, in the area between the airstrip and the river.

Millionfisken and Getting Around

Millionfisken is a fishing competition for people of all ages, held in the municipality of Salangen. The competition takes place every year on the first weekend of July. Several thousand visitors attend, and around 2,000 people take part in the fishing. Visitor numbers and the programme can vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip specifically for Millionfisken, check the exact event dates before you travel.

For road directions: Fv. 851 connects Sjøvegan with the E6 at Brandhaug in Bardu and is 19 km long. As road conditions can change, check them before you set off. Salangen Airport in Elvenes is a non-commercial airport.
