Lyngen covers the northern part of the peninsula between Ullsfjord and Lyngenfjord. The Lyngen Alps rise from the fjord, with some peaks reaching more than 1,000 metres. At 1,834 metres, Jiehkkevárri is the highest point in the Lyngen Alps. Within the wider Troms travel region, the Lyngen Alps extend across Lyngen, Storfjord and Tromsø. The mountain range therefore reaches beyond the municipality of the same name.

Hiking destinations with different highlights

The return hike to Lyngstuva is about 6 km long; allow roughly two hours in total. At the destination, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and islands. For a different perspective on the landscape, take the return hike to Blåisvatnet in Sør-Lenangen, which is about 8 km long. The lake’s intense blue contrasts sharply with the steep mountain slopes in the background. The hike to Blåisvatnet is considered suitable for the whole family. Lyngstuva thus combines trail information with a panorama, while the visual contrast at the lake is the main highlight at Blåisvatnet. If you are choosing between the two destinations, these different features can help you decide.

Cultural sites and farm history

The area between Russelv and Lyngstuva is home to Sámi, Kven and Norwegian cultural sites that bear witness to settlement over many generations. Gamslett, a traditional fishing and farming homestead, is located in Svensby, in the municipality of Lyngen on Lyngenfjord. The farmstead and collection offer insight into how fishing farmers traditionally adapted to their living conditions. The site includes several historic farm buildings and a garden with traditional plants and trees from the region. Historic cultural sites and the farmstead thus offer different ways to explore Lyngen’s history.

Whisky in Årøybukt

Aurora Spirit, the world’s northernmost whisky distillery, is located in Årøybukt in Lyngen. Aurora Spirit offers tours and tastings. The Arctic Whisky Experience includes three complimentary tastings from a small selection of carefully chosen house spirits. This culinary highlight adds to the range of landscapes, hikes and cultural history. If you are planning a tour or tasting, check the current options before your visit.
