Kvænangen: Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Kvænangen
Kvænangen brings together striking landscapes, traces of earlier ways of life and experiences on the water. Pine forests, mountain valleys and waterfalls give the area a different character from its historic cabins and cultural sites. You can tailor your stay around hikes, nature watching or cultural insights.
Forests, Valleys and Waterfalls
Kvænangsbotn Landscape Protection Area includes pine forests, small lakes and marshes between hills and ridges of resistant rock; birch forests are also part of the landscape. Visible traces of Sámi reindeer husbandry and Kven forestry can be seen in the area. Navitdalen Landscape Protection Area presents a different scene: a forested mountain valley with a slow-flowing river, open areas on the valley floor and a mountain range to the east. Its peaks reach up to 1,200 metres.
Storfossen, also called Stuoragorži, has a drop of 20 to 30 metres. From the rock above the waterfall, the view extends across Kvænangsdalen; some access routes are unmarked. A separate starting point lies south of Navitfossen. There are parking spaces, benches and a toilet, as well as access to the waterfall and hikes into Navitdalen. Be sure to distinguish between the two waterfalls and their starting points when finding your way around.
Hikes and Excursions in Kvænangsbotn
Kvænangsbotn Landscape Protection Area offers a range of options: short day hikes to cabins or longer trips with your own tent and fishing rod. A five-kilometre route through Gearbbetdalen leads to Gerbikkhytta. Built in 1895, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Kvænangen. The hike to Navitdalen is about seven kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 350 metres. Trail conditions can change, so take this into account when planning.
These excursions differ both in their stated duration and in the equipment intended for longer trips. The hikes in Navitdalen are particularly suited to travellers who want to bring a tent and backpack; a fishing rod and camera are also listed as suitable equipment. These are recommendations, not requirements. So consider in advance whether a short day hike or a longer trip with your own equipment is a better fit for your outing.
Cabins and Cultural Sites
Dalstuene, also known as Skogstuene, is the Nord-Troms Museum's historic site in Kvænangen Municipality. The three cabins are Gammelstua, Stallen and Nystua. Gammelstua was built in the 1880s, while the other two cabins date from the early 20th century. They were used year-round to make use of forest resources. The different construction dates and names give the site its own history, distinct from the visible traces in the landscape.
On Spildra, the cultural heritage area includes more than 300 Stone Age house foundations. Archaeological traces also include ruins of former Sámi dwellings, Sieidi sacrificial stones, bear graves, scree burials, and graves in rock clefts and caves. On a guided cultural heritage tour, participants are driven about 2.5 kilometres to the starting point of the heritage trail. The tour is offered in Norwegian and English; check availability before your trip.
Experiences on the Fjord and Islands
A guided boat safari travels from Spildra towards Jøkelfjord and offers the chance to go ashore below the Øksfjordjøkulen glacier. Confirm departure times and landing conditions in advance. Kvænangen Adventure works with a certified local glacier guide; day trips to Øksfjordjøkulen are available daily on request. Here too, check availability before your trip.
A full-day fjord photo safari goes to the island of Skorpa. It has a bird cliff, a church dating from 1793 and plant life that is unique in a European context. Sightings and access may vary. Whale watching is offered from Spildra, Burfjord or Skjervøy; sightings and departures may vary here too. In Kvænangen Municipality, recreational snowmobiling is also permitted on a network of trails about 225 kilometres long. Its status is seasonal and may change.
Planning and Getting Around
If you would like to add cultural history in Burfjord, the “Stories from the war” exhibition at Flerbrukshuset can be visited year-round. Opening hours may change, so contact the museum beforehand. For other excursions, it is worth choosing your activities according to the conditions: trail conditions can change on the hike to Navitdalen, and departures, landings and sightings may vary on boat trips. This lets you plan your stay around the specific activity without confusing waterfalls, valleys and cultural sites.
